During the NHL’s hiatus, we at the Last Word on Hockey are going to look back at each date’s historical significance to the game. We’ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here’s our look at this date in hockey history for May 14th, featuring the 2009-10 Philadelphia Flyers.

2009-10 Philadelphia Flyers Complete Rally

2010: Simon Gagne‘s power-play goal helps the Flyers beat the Boston Bruins 4-3 in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semifinal. Philadelphia is the third team and first in 35 years to rally from an 0-3 hole. The Flyers even rallied from three goals down in Game 7.

James van Riemsdyk, Scott Hartnell and Daniel Briere each score to help the Flyers get back in the game. Gagne scores with 7:08 left in regulation. Philadelphia joins the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs and 1975 New York Islanders to win a series after losing the first three games. The 2014 Los Angeles Kings turn the trick four post-seasons later.

Other Notable Events

1977: The Montreal Canadiens complete a dominant season with a four-game sweep of Boston in the Stanley Cup Final. Jacques Lemaire scores both goals for the Habs.

1985: Paul Coffey gets the points record for defencemen in a playoff game with six. He gets a goal and five assists in the Edmonton Oilers 10-5 Game 5 win over the Chicago Blackhawks. Wayne Gretzky and Jarri Kurri each score twice in the Campbell Conference Final victory.

1993: David Volek‘s OT-goal helps the Islanders dethrone the two-time champion Pittsburgh Penguins, 4-3. Volek’s two goals lead the Isles to a Game 7 victory in the Patrick Division Final.

1995: The New Jersey Devils close down the Boston Garden with a 3-2 Game 5 win in the first round over Boston. Adam Oates scores the last goal on the vaunted ice.

2003: Jean-Sebastien Giguere ties a playoff record with his third consecutive shutoutas the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim beat the Minnesota Wild, 3-0. He makes 35 saves in Game 3 of the Western Final.

2008: Mike Modano becomes the highest-scoring American in the playoffs in the Dallas Stars 3-1 win in Game 1 of the Western Final. Modano scores a goal to give 145 career playoff points in the victory over the Detroit Red Wings.

2011: Dwayne Roloson ties Jacques Plante‘s record with his eighth straight post-season wins by a goalie over 40. Roloson helps the Tampa Bay Lightning beat Boston, 5-2.

2014: Montreal ties a league-record with its 14th Game 7 win in a 3-1 second-round victory over Boston.

2018: Jonathan Marchessault scores twice as the Vegas Golden Knights are the first team to win nine playoff games in their first season. Vegas tops the Winnipeg Jets, 3-1, in Game 2 of the West final.
