NHL Rumours: The Battle for the Blues’ Forward Spots

September 21, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

Welcome to NHL Rumours! We have a full slate of preseason games to look forward to this week. If you need a break from the NFL or the final week of the MLB season, tune in to the NHL Network for preseason action! For now, we thank you for joining us for our latest rumour. This rumour pertains to the battle for the last forward spots on the St. Louis Blues’ roster.

The Battle for the Blues’ Forward Spots

All rumours come from the original source and are subject to change.

Rumour: Jeremy Rutherford of The Athletic talks about the Blues’ final forward spots and who is in the running. Rutherford explains that Milan Lucic, Alexandre Texier, Mathieu Joseph, and Dalibor Dvorsky are competing for three available forward spots. Rutherford mentions that Texier and Joseph were notable presences on the ice during Saturday’s practice. Furthermore, Rutherford mentions that Lucic, whom the Blues signed to a professional tryout contract, had looked “okay” but may need to do more to win a spot.

What I’m seeing at Blues camp: Holloway’s next level? Mailloux in D-zone? Lucic a lock? #stlblues https://t.co/RN3curJw6l

Analysis: It is not a surprise that these are the players in the mix for the final forward spots. Furthermore, it is not a surprise that Texier and Joseph are the standouts so far in training camp. Both had consistent roles on the roster last season and would be the most familiar with head coach Jim Montgomery‘s style of play.

While performances in practices are essential, it will be interesting to see how the players do when they step into preseason game action. How these players perform against other competition will be the determining factor in who earns the final forward spots.

Lucic Not a Lock

Lucic is a former 30-goal scorer who helped the Boston Bruins win the Stanley Cup in 2011. However, Lucic’s scoring days are behind him. His value to the Blues is as a depth option, a physical presence, and a locker room leader.

As Rutherford mentions, Lucic will have the opportunity to showcase his value to the Blues once he enters the lineup in a preseason game. It will be important for Lucic to stand out during these games. The games are where Lucic will earn his spot on the team. Lucic cannot be as physical during practice as he can during games. These games need to be where Lucic makes his statement. Otherwise, he will be back on the market.

Surprised to See Dvorsky?

Dvorksy is someone who profiles as a scorer in this league. After 21 goals in the American Hockey League last season, there is no reason to change that projection.

Given that the Blues’ top six is set, it does seem odd that Dvorsky is in the running for one of the final forward spots. The forwards who take those final spots are likely not guaranteed regular playing time.

As a result, it would make more sense for Dvorksy to start the season in the AHL, where he can get regular playing time on the top line. If an opportunity with the Blues arises, then Dvorksy can get called up.

Even if Dvorsky is bound for the AHL, that does not make this preseason without meaning. A strong performance can put him on the radar early on, should an injury arise.
