West Chester United capture USL League Two division title in inaugural season

Troy Amspacher celebrates a first half goal for West Chester United on July 9 , 2021 | Mike Kruce

Troy Amspacher and Chris Donovan scored to give West Chester United a 2-1 win in a game delayed by weather

They had to wait through a lengthy weather delay, but West Chester United capped off their inaugural regular season in USL League Two with a Mid-Atlantic Division title with a 2-1 road win over Ocean City Nor’easters Friday night.

Troy Amspacher put the Predators (11-1-2) in front in the 31st minute when he got on the end of a Kyle Tucker cross and punched it in through traffic but then the bad weather came and delayed the game for about 90 minutes.

Once the teams returned from the delay, the Predators were able to extend their lead on a goal from Chris Donovan that was deflected on its way just before halftime. From there it was a matter of closing out the game for the visitors, which needed only a tie to clinch the division title.

Ocean City (8-2-3) was able to pull a goal back on a penalty from Theo Quartey he was able to put past Kent Dickey, but the Nor’easters will have to settle for second place and a playoff berth following their regular season finale on Sunday against Philadelphia Lone Star in South Philly.

West Chester wrapped up their first regular season in USL League Two with just one blemish coming in their first visit to Carey Stadium after already playing a game earlier in the day to clinch a spot in the Region 1 final of the National Amateur Cup. The two teams played to a scoreless draw at West Chester in their other meeting this season. Real Central Jersey’s scoreless draw at West.Chester in mid-May was the only other time the Predators dropped points.

A big reason for that was the back line, which conceded just 6 times in 14 games while the offense put in 29 goals to finish with a plus 23 in goal differential.
