The Philadelphia Union bounced back from the first loss of the season in a huge way. They claimed the top spot in the East as a clash with Inter Miami looms on Saturday. Fortunately, it looks like Miami will be without the GOAT.
It was an ugly loss to Nashville last weekend. It was a loss that displayed how bad the Union defense can be and how bad MLS officiating can get. Nonetheless, the Union did not let that outcome affect them on the field Saturday against St Louis. Despite being down 6 starters due to international duty and suspension, the Union gutted out an impressive 1-0 win.
It was the first-ever meeting between the Union and Bradley Carnell’s former club St Louis. It was also the anticipated debut of defender Ian Glavinovich. Glavinovich not only showed what he could do defensively but also netted his first career goal with the Union in just 8 minutes.
With the win, the Union find themselves back at the top of the Eastern Conference, collecting 12 points through 5 games. Now, the club heads down to Florida to face league giants Inter Miami. However, Miami will be missing a large piece.
The Union Dodge Messi
Lionel Messi aggravated an injury a few weeks ago that kept him off Argentina’s national team. Unfortunately for Miami, they will be without the GOAT as they face the Union in Florida. Nonetheless, Miami will be fresh as they are coming off a bye week.
Even without Messi, Miami is one of the most dangerous teams in the league. Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba, and Telasco Segovia can do plenty of damage without him. This game will be yet another test of what the Union can be this season. Their 4-0-1 start has been unexpected. However, a win down in Miami would be a huge statement.
The Union have shown they can win in a shootout and gut out a 1-0 win. However, they have also been subject to defensive woes. Hopefully, Ian Glavinovich can shut those down. Nonetheless, a 0-0 draw in Miami on Saturday is not expected.
The House Money Season Continues
The Union is playing with house money this season. While Philadelphia fans always expect to compete for championships, no one expected this team to sniff the top of MLS. With a brand new coach, an aging roster, and younger players playing for their futures, the Union is just supposed to be seeing what they have to work with.
However, these situations can create some of the most dangerous teams. The Union being on fire early in the season is no fluke. If Bradley Carnell can continue to push the right buttons the Union may have something here. Nonetheless, in a season where they were heading towards a complete rebuild, the Union look like a scary team no one wants to see.
