Brazilian youth international Gabriel Silva plays for Palmeiras

The Philadelphia Union reportedly submitted a $2.5 million bid to Palmeiras for 19-year-old Brazilian striker Gabriel Silva.

This is according to a report from Bruno Andrade for Brazilian outlet UOL.

Though the report states that Palmeiras was close to parting with the young striker, it shows that the Union are reportedly very much in the market for finding a striker.

UPDATE: According to Larry Henry Jr., it was the Union who ended negotiations.

Silva’s age as a target shows interest in the possibility of signing a striker who can then be resold for a profit, something they have yet to accomplish under Sporting Director Ernst Tanner despite offseason rumors of interest for left back Kai Wagner and forward Sergio Santos.

Silva’s age would also give the Union a chance to take advantage of Major League Soccer’s U22 initiative, which “allows MLS clubs to sign up to three young players, age 22 and younger, to lucrative contracts at a reduced budget charge, decreasing the risk associated with acquiring or retaining players who are still approaching their prime.”
