Rate The U: A 90 minute weather delay didn’t stop the DOOP

MLS: D.C. United at Philadelphia Union
Mitchell Leff-USA TODAY Sports

It was a big night for Sergio Santos, who scored early and kept the pressure going

It is something Union fans are used to seeing, after the past two games, quick goals in the first half. However, for this time it was the Philadelphia Union getting on the board first. Thanks to Sergio Santos’ goal in the 11th minute. The goal was a great team setup with a timely pass from Daniel Gazdag.

Watching the game back, it is not all positive for Santos. Especially since it was his stupid decision that almost cost the Union two points. The move happened in the 50th minute when Santos committed a foul on Yordy Reyna inside the penalty area. United’s Yamil Asad would have no problem converting the penalty against Union’s Joe Bendik.

Speaking of Bendik, I am sure many people will not give him the credit he deserves. Besides guessing wrong on the PK, he had a great night in net. The man had two great saves, including a fingertip save in the 38th minute. Later in the match Bendik would have to stretch as he dives to the right to keep United’s shot from converting. All in all, if it wasn’t for that PK, fans might be talking more this morning about Bendik’s performance and how he was better than they expected.

The game was three minutes from stoppage time before the ref sent the teams to the locker room because of lightning. After a 90 minute weather delay, the game restarted around 11:20 when United kicked received the ball 6 yards in front of their penalty area.

Incase you were wondering, MLS’s competition book calls for play to resume where the ball was at when the game is suspended. Also another key point is that no matter when the game is called, it has to play the full 90 minutes.

After 8 total minutes of play, the ref blew the whistle to make the game official. Union picking up three crucial points, but more importantly they have moved into second play in the East.

Now it is time for you to share your opinion of the team’s recent game by rating the Philadelphia Union’s individual performances. Fill out our Community Player Ratings Poll.
