News broke that European giants Bayern Munich approached the Union, offering German star Thomas Müller. Does this move make sense for the Union? Also, does the Union need another star as they sit at the top of the MLS?
It happens around this time every year. The European schedule comes to a close, so the clubs in Europe are making their big moves. However, the Union rarely finds itself involved in these transfers. Should the Union be interested in a move like this, it would be the first time the club pulls a trigger like this. Coincidentally, the Union may be just one European legend short of the MLS Cup that has slipped through their fingers in the past.
Does Müller Make Sense for the Union?
The question of whether bringing Müller in makes sense is a loaded one. In many cases, it does make sense. In many other cases, it does not. First, the move would make a ton of sense in the sense that there is no proven winner on the roster. No player on the Union roster has experience closing out big games and winning championships. That trait is one of the many reasons they lost the MLS Cup in 2022. When a proven winner, Gareth Bale, snatched the cup out of the Union’s hands 90 seconds before the final whistle.
Also, it would show that the Union front office is serious about winning. Despite being seconds away from league champions, the Union did not invest after 2022. Instead, the club allowed regression to hit, and now we have a revamped Union squad in 2025. If they make a move like this, it shows they are serious about winning and are willing to do what it takes to win.
Now, the reason the move for Müller doesn’t make sense is money. Müller and his team want $8-$10 million from the Union. Every Union fan knows there is no chance of that happening. To be fair, it would be a steep overpayment. Müller, despite being a proven winner at all levels of the sport, is 35 years old. Müller is also absolutely at the tail end of his career, and his play has shown it.
While Müller may not be the answer, that doesn’t mean the principle of the move wouldn’t make sense.
The Union Needs Another Star
There is no question that the Union needs another star. Tai Baribo, who leads MLS in goals scored, has exploded onto the scene this year. However, the Union has shipped out playmakers like Daniel Gazdag and Jack McGlynn. The current Union squad is leading the way halfway through the season, but a star can push them to the top.
While a 35-year-old Müller may not be the answer, the Union could get just as good a player for that $8-$10 million. Take Columbus as an example. They brought in a young Chucho Hernandez, and he propelled them to an MLS Cup.
Ernst Tanner’s eye for unknown talent has gotten the Union to this point before. However, the lack of championship experience has cost the Union trophies. If they don’t want to face the same fate, ownership will commit to this team.
