Zack Wheeler and J.T. Realmuto named to All-Star team

Phillies will have two representatives in the Midsummer Classic

The pitchers and reserves for the National League All-Star team were announced on Sunday, and for the first time since 2013, the Phillies will have more than one representative on the team. Starting pitcher Zack Wheeler and catcher J.T. Realmuto were named to the National League squad.

Wheeler was a lock, as he’s arguably been the best pitcher in the National League. (Jacob deGrom is apparently not human, so he shouldn’t even be mentioned in the conversation.) He’s leading the National League in innings pitched, pitcher WAR, and strikeouts. He’s also fourth in ERA and ninth in WHIP.

It was more questionable if Realmuto would make the team. Buster Posey was voted as the NL’s starting catcher by the fans, but there were several other strong candidates for a reserve spot, including Will Smith, and Omar Narvaez. It seems that Realmuto’s established status as the best catcher in baseball probably carried some weight, even if he’s not having his best season.

The last time the Phillies had more than one player on the All-Star team, they were represented by Domonic Brown and Cliff Lee. So yeah, it’s been awhile.

Here are the full rosters for both the National and American League teams.
