There are options
The other day, John Stolnis made a case that the team’s MVP to start this season has been Jose Alvarado. The argument made is a compelling one. With the team’s bullpen struggling as mightily as they have, having someone as lockdown as Alvarado has been has helped that unit collectively perform better than it could have been. Remember – there really hasn’t been one consistent performer out there outside of Alvarado. For a team that is in as many close games as they have, that’s nothing to sneeze at.
However, there are arguments that can be made for others on the roster that they have been more valuable. Bryson Stott has the surface level numbers (even if the behind the scenes ones offer a more muted response), Kyle Schwarber has been a wrecking crew by himself, Cristopher Sanchez and Jesus Luzardo have both had Cy Young-level starts to their season and that’s just a few.
Which brings us to our question for today: who, in your eyes, has been the team’s MVP to begin the season? It could be one of the options listed above, or maybe you have someone else in mind.
