Otto Kemp is indeed exciting. But he’s not the first Phillies prospect to stoke the flames of hope in Phillies fans’ hearts. Getting one’s hopes up for the potential of prospects is part and parcel with the baseball experience, and even the most cynical fan finds themselves doing it from time to time. If you’ve been a fan for more that a hot minute, you certainly can name prospects that you expected to become the next Phillie superstar. That single-A pitcher who you swore was going to be an ace. That slugger with a big hit tool. That top draft pick who just couldn’t miss.

All prospects have a future, but not always the one we’d like them to have.
