Does it shift any kind of odds for the wild card?
So, that was shocking.
Some trades come out of left field and to see that Rafael Devers has moved to the San Francisco Giants, a trade consummated last night, was something that probably no one saw coming. There has been some obvious unrest within the organization, but usually that stuff works itself out. Alas, no longer.
So let’s turn to the future and use this as our question of the day: how does the Rafael Devers trade to San Francisco affect the Phillies?
In case you didn’t notice, the Giants have been playing quite well and even took a share of the NL West lead over the weekend (since recaptured by the Dodgers). Unexpectedly, they are still well within reach of a playoff spot, the division even, and actually look like a real threat right now. While the deal may not affect the Phillies in a direct way, there are tangential effects. For instance, now there is another team that is nearer to them in the wild card race, even if the Phillies look like they’re still in fine shape for that should the division not work out. However, the Giants did finally land their superstar and could still add pieces. So, does this shift the balance of power at all? Are the Giants a real threat to the Phillies and the rest of the National League?
