Sad news after a sad night
Ryne Sandberg passed away last night after his battle with cancer. Known more for his playing days with the Cubs, we know him as the manager with the Phillies from midway through the 2013 season to roughly midway through the 2015 season, the one we’re remembering a bit at a time this year.
Sandberg came into the Phillies managerial position after being passed over for the Cubs spot, a snubbing that didn’t sit well with him. He had been managing the team’s minor league team in Lehigh Valley, so he knew many of the players already. Unfortunately for him and for the team, he didn’t have enough talent here to show if he was a capable manager or not, saddling him with the beginnings of the rebuild that was needed. He had some bad moments as a manager, no doubt, but for today, let’s remember him for his Hall of Fame years in Chicago.
He was one of the best second baseman in the game’s history, a gift to Chicago from the Phillies in a trade after the 1981 season. He was, by all accounts, a good man and a great baseball player. Rest in peace, Ryne.
