Pitching depth is important folks.
Well, it appears the Phillies perceived starting pitching depth may be tested right out of the gate. Rob Thomson announced yesterday that Ranger Suárez is dealing with “mild back stiffness” and will not make his scheduled start on Friday. The team is claiming the injury isn’t as bad as the back problems Suárez suffered last year that cost him about a month of the season.
But still, it now appears that there is a good chance that Taijuan Walker may have to start the season in the Phillies rotation. Walker allowed 6 runs on 9 hits including three home runs in 3.2 IP in his start against the Yankees yesterday. Philadelphia currently has three scheduled off days within the first ten games of the season, so it’s also possible they elect to not use a fifth starter until they need one. Something to monitor as camp comes to a close.
