Looking like the 2020 bullpen has returned like some kind of awful returning thing.
Raimel Tapia walked off the Phillies and Hector Neris hitting a solo home run with one out in the bottom of the ninth, capping off a bullpen very reminiscent of yesteryear.
Vince Velasquez made a spot start in place of a COVID-ed Matt Moore, and not much was expected. But Velasquez pitched relatively well, and Didi Gregorius and Alec Bohm drove in JT Realmuto and Bryce Harper, respectively, with fielder’s choices, spotting VV to a 2-0 lead into the fourth. But then the wheels came off a bit.
Solo homers b y Trevor Story and CJ Cron in the fourth were the extent of the damage, which by recent standards is a very mild case of “wheels off.” That was it for Velasquez, though. Jojo Romero pitched a clean fifth, and the Phils retoook the lead with Roman Quinn scoring on an Andrew McCutchen sac fly and Rhys Hoskins hitting his fourth homer of the year. 4-2.
Then David Hale, in his second inning of relief, allowed a runner who was allowed to score by Sam Coonrod. 4-3 in the 7th.
Then Coonrod allowed a run of his own in his second inning of relief, in the 8th, with a homer by Garret Hampson. 4-4.
Finally Hector Neris allowed the walkoff hit by Tapia. 4-5.
By the way, there was a comment in the gamethread that compared Tapia to tilapia, hence the title. Raw fish.
Also as we learned on the post-game Friday night roundtable, Tom McCarthy doesn’t know how to pronounce gigolo. Wondering how he says GIF.
The Phils drop to 9-10, and are tied with the Barflanta Voter Suppressions for second place in the NL East. Game two in this series is tomorrow night, with the Phils sending Aaron Nola to the hill against the Rock’s Antonio Senzatela. Our own Cormican will be attending and recapping tomorrow night, so wish him well.
Also, McCarthy, being bald, has a great story about hair loss. Also on the roundtable, he said, “back when I had a semblance of hair, not just the cul-de-sac, I was buying some Rogaine at a CVS, and the clerk was checking me out, and also checking me out. And he looks at the box and says “I think it’s too late, man.” “
