Ranking Phillies 4th of July Caps

July 4, 2025 by Philadelphia Sports Nation

In 2008 Major League Baseball began making speciality hats for the 4th of July. Previously an American patch was added to the side of team’s normal caps. Let’s rank the Phillies best 4th of July hats over the years!

  1. 2010:

Starting off the list and easily my favorite version of the 4th of July hats comes from 2010. The all white top with red brim and bottom to match is beautiful. The flag in the logo is intricate yet simple. Very nicely done. Huge fan of this hat, they should still sell it still.

Game Note: On the 4th this season the Phillies fell to the Pirates by a score of 8-5, with Phillies catcher Dane Sardinha going yard.

  1. 2011:

Coming in at second, you get an obvious look into my taste. The MLB crushed in back to back years. Similar to the 2010 hat, the red and white combo is a clean, fresh mix. I prefer the all white top to the half red/half white, but still a nice cap.

Game Note: The Phillies took down the Marlins 1-0 while the Phils sported these caps. Michael Martinez singled in Dom Brown for the only run. Vance Worley went 7 strong, with Antonio Bastardo closing out the game.

  1. 2008:

The first installment of the flag hats comes in at number 3 on the list. The navy is a nice complement to the Phillies colors and an ode to our nations colors. Although the Phillies don’t really wear navy, this is a clean Phillies hat. Not too much going on, but a really nice simple hat.

Game Note: On the 4th of July in 2008 the Phillies beat the rival Mets 3-2. Shane Victorino singled home Pedro Feliz to give the Phillies a win in walk off fashion.

  1. 2024:

Next up on the list is 2024. The MLB went away from the red and blue hats in 2024 with a gray cap. Personally I love the color gray. Gray is a perfect accent color and works nicely with the red. I also like the bold blue outline on the P making it stand out. This is also the favorite iteration of the flag logo, with the stars on the top left and the stripes filling out the P.

Game Note: Last season the Phils got crushed by the Cubs 10-2. Cristopher Sanchez had a rough day giving up 7 runs in 4 innings.

  1. 2009:

The 5th best hat on the list comes from 2009. Basically a classic red Phillies hat, with the flag logo added. This hat won’t jump out at anyone but as someone who appreciates a simple design, I like that the MLB didn’t do anything crazy that season.

Game Note: In the 2009 season, the Phillies beat the Mets 4-1 on Independence Day. Jamie Moyer secured the win, and J-Roll added two RBIs. If you want to feel nostalgic about Phillies baseball the pitchers that day were Jamie Moyer, Chad Durbin, J.C. Romero, Ryan Madson, and Brad Lidge.

  1. 2017:

Coming in at number 6 is the hat from 2017. I love what they did with the red cap and blue brim. Almost a reverse of the Phillies day game hats, this is one of the nicer 4th of July caps.

Game Note: Phillies lost 3-0 to the Pirates. The Phillies lineup featuring Freddy Galvis and Michael Franco couldn’t muster up any runs on 6 hits.

  1. 2018:

After the top 6 there is a small dropoff in the quality of hats. Overall this hat is fine. I am not a huge fan of the big national league logo on the side, but the stars and stripes in the P are the main attraction.

Game Note: The Phillies celebrated a 4-1 over Baltimore on the 4th in 2018. A two run home run in the 7th from Nick Williams put the game out of reach, securing Nola the win.

  1. 2025:

Coming in at number 8 is this years version of the hat. I am a personal fan of the rope hats, but I don’t love the light blue. Makes it look like a fathers day hat instead of a 4th of July hat. This hat may be higher if I was ranking all alternates, but the fathers day vibe moves it down the list. Sticking with a more American navy blue, like the 2008 hat would’ve been the better option.

Game Note: The Phillies will take on the Cincinnati Reds tomorrow at 1:05.

  1. 2014:

I like this hat, but something about it gives me little league vibes. The star behind the logo is at least different from the other designs, but not my favorite. MLB went away from the flag in the logo this season and instead went with a star. Feels like they got the design from the USA Baseball hat.

Game Note: The Pirates took down the Phillies by a score of 8-2, with Jimmy Rollins and Marlyn Byrd providing the RBIs.

  1. 2021:

The drop off has begun. The rest of these hats are all fine. I enjoy the simplicity with this hat. The PHI on the side is ok, but doesn’t add much value. However, I do like the white outline on the P and the Stars/Stripes in this particular logo.

Game Note: Not a good day on the diamond for the Phillies this fourth of July. San Diego beat them down, 11-1.

  1. 2013:

Another gray version, this time, with a stars only logo. This hat doesn’t scream Phillies or 4th of July to me, but still a nice color combination. Should the Phillies roll out gray caps to match the road unis? I say why not.

Game Note: Cole Hamels took down Gerrrit Cole and the Pirates 6-4. Ben Revere and Carlos Ruiz had two RBIs a piece, with Phillies save leader Jonathan Papelbon closing it out.

  1. Pre 08:

Before the stars and stripes logos each team had an American flag logo on the side of their normal cap. No complaints on this one. But nothing that would catch your eye. A nice alternate to a normal Phillies hat though.

Game Note: In 2007 the Phils beat Houston 8-3 on Independence Day. Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Howard, Pat Burrell, and Wes Helms all homered for The Fightins’

  1. 2012:

In 2012  the MLB changed the trend of the flag being used in the logo. This time they went with camo. Not a camo fan. This hat falls near the bottom of the list because of that.

Game Note: Despite my dislike for the hat, the Phillies still won, crushing the Mets 9-2. I love beating the Mets. Cliff Lee came away with the win, while Ty Wigginton, Chase Utley, and Carlos Ruiz went yard

  1. 2015:

And now the rest of these are all awful. The flag background is plain bad. A miss in 2015 by Major League Baseball.

Game Note: Thanks to this awful hat the Phillies fell 9-5 to Atlanta. Kevin Correia started for the Phillies giving up all 9 runs.

  1. 2022:

I actually don’t hate hate this hat, but it is ugly. The stars and stripes streaked across the hat aren’t really doing it for me. There is too much going on in the front. Another miss by Major League Baseball.

Game Note: The Phillies didn’t play on the 4th this season, but beat St. Louis on the 3rd 4-0, with Zack Wheeler going 7 strong (what’s new).

  1. 2019:

I do enjoy the color combinations of this particular cap, but that’s about it. The P font is bad and almost too hard to read. Also still not a fan of the logo on the side of the cap. This looks like a knockoff hat you buy in a tourist shop.

Game Note: Zach Eflin took the loss against the Braves this season on the 4th. Gabe Kapler’s best friend Sean Rodriquez went yard in the loss.

  1. 2023:

Another hat with an ugly P and unnecessary side logo. This falls second to last. And for those reasons, I am out on this hat.

Game Note: Aaron Nola took down Zach Eflin and the Rays 3-1. Harper, Stott, and Bohm knocked in the 3 runs for the Phils.

  1. 2016:

Coming in at last place is whatever this is. MLB went with another background design instead of touching the logo. The stars in the background are plain bad. Nothing appealing about this hat.

Game Note: With the power of an ugly hat behind them Philadelphia beat Atlanta 8-2 thanks to a 7 run second. The core of the down years Herrera, Franco, Hernandez, and Galvis, and Joseph knocked in the runs.

Let me know your favorites in the comments! If the Phillies were to add another hat to the rotation what should they add?

Editor Note: I was unable to find a version for the 2020 COVID season.
