Philadelphia Phillies utility player Weston Wilson is currently on a rehab assignment with Low-A Clearwater. Wilson has been out with an oblique injury suffered during spring training. The latest this rehab assignment could conclude is April 28. Wilson will then either join the Phillies’ 26-man roster or be optioned to the minor leagues. If he is optioned, it is worth noting that this is his last minor league option year. Wilson would presumably be optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley if that is indeed what happens. Given that Kody Clemens is out of minor league options, Wilson would probably go to Triple-A when he is activated. Clemens would also probably be claimed off waivers by another team if he were to be designated for assignment.
Before today’s game, Rob Thomson gave us some updates on his injured players:
Andrew Painter will pitch Friday and go 3 innings or 50 pitches
Ranger Suárez will pitch Tuesday and go 4 innings or 55 pitches
Weston Wilson will play 2nd tomorrow at Lehigh, playing all game

Phillies’ Weston Wilson Expected To Return From Injured List Relatively Soon
In four games during this rehab assignment, Wilson has a .100/.357/.100 line with no home runs and no RBI. He also has a 67 wRC+, a .295 wOBA and a .143 BABIP, along with a 21.4% strikeout rate and a 28.6% walk rate. Wilson has made three starts in left field and one start at third base during this rehab assignment. It is not entirely surprising to see him primarily in left, considering what his role would be on the 26-man roster. Wilson brings a lot of defensive versatility. It is noteworthy, though, that Wilson has been playing those two positions given what is currently happening with the Phillies. Wilson happens to play the two positions with the worst offensive production right now.
What Happens With Phillies Roster After Rehab Assignment
The Phillies’ outfield has an offensive production problem at the moment. Brandon Marsh is 0-for-32 since March 31 with an abysmal -33 wRC+ in that span. Alec Bohm is the lone player with a worse wRC+ than Marsh in that span among players with at least 30 plate appearances. Marsh is 1-for-36 with a 2 wRC+ if you add the Phillies game on March 30. Bohm also has the worst wRC+ among players who have at least 30 plate appearances since March 30. However, Marsh ranks as having the eighth-worst wRC+ among that group in that stretch. Marsh does have the worst batting average (.036) and slugging percentage (.036) among that group since March 3o, though.
With Bohm off to a bad start to the season and Marsh struggling as well, it is possible Wilson takes one of their places on the Phillies’ 26-man roster. Bohm and Marsh both have two minor league options available. Additionally, neither Bohm nor Marsh has enough major league service time to be able to reject a minor league option. Despite their struggles, the Phillies have given no indication they are considering optioning either player. Marsh is probably more likely to be optioned to the minor leagues than Bohm is. Given the current replacement options, this would probably not happen until Wilson is ready to be activated from the injured list. Wilson being optioned and Clemens being designated for assignment are the most likely outcomes.
