Phillies Reliever Placed On Injured List

July 23, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

The Philadelphia Phillies have placed reliever Joe Ross on the 15-day injured list due to back spasms. Additionally, Alan Rangel was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to fill the open spot on the 26-man roster. Rangel has gone back and forth between the majors and Triple-A in recent weeks. This season, Ross has made one spot start but primarily has been pitching out of the bullpen in a multi-inning role. Ross has a 2-1 record with a 5.28 ERA in 31 games this season. To add, Ross has a 2.13 K/BB rate along with a 1.51 WHIP this year. Furthermore, Ross has a 5.12 FIP this season. Ross being put on the injured list is retroactive to July 21.

Phillies Reliever Ross Is Now On The Injured List

Bullpen Impact

The Phillies recently signed pitcher David Robertson to agree to being optioned to Triple-A to build up. Robertson is not eligible to be called up until early August unless he is replacing an injured player or someone going on another list. This is likely why Rangel received the call here. Additionally, Rangel has been starting in the minor leagues this season and can provide length, similar to Ross. With Taijuan Walker moving in and out of the rotation, having pitchers who can provide length out of the bullpen is important.

Rangel has a 2.25 ERA and one save in two major league outings this season. In the majors, Rangel has a 1.67 K/BB rate as well as a 1.50 WHIP this year. Rangel has a 4.59 FIP in the majors. This season in the minor leagues, Rangel has a 5-3 record along with a 4.75 ERA in 17 starts. Rangel has a 2.94 K/BB rate and a 1.38 WHIP in the minor leagues this year. To add to that, Rangel has recorded a 5.36 FIP in the minor leagues this year. There has been no indication that Rangel will start for the Phillies as he has been doing in Triple-A this season.
