Phillies Outfield Prospect Gabriel Rincones Jr. Turning Heads This Spring

February 27, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

Phillies prospect Gabriel Rincones Jr. is having an impressive spring at the plate.

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Gabriel Rincones Jr. is having an impressive spring training. The Phillies’ third-round draft pick in 2022, he has appeared in each of the teams four spring training games. A non-roster invitee, Rincones will likely start the season at Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He has 59 career Double-A appearances and has not played in Triple-A yet. Last season, Rincones had limited playing time because of injuries. He spent the entire 2023 minor league season at Low-A and High-A, playing in 48 games at Low-A Clearwater and 72 games at High-A Jersey Shore. Rincones played in nine Florida Complex League games last season before moving to Double-A, where he would end up finishing the 2024 season.

Later in the 2025 season, Rincones could see major league playing time if he continues to play well. Justin Crawford another top outfield prospect could also see major league playing time this season. The presence of left-handed hitting outfielders Max Kepler and Brandon Marsh will make it harder for Crawford and Rincones to reach the majors this year. The Phillies’ outfield depth needs to be addressed by adding a right-handed hitting outfielder. Crawford and Rincones are both left-handed hitters. Rincones, who turns 24 on March 3, will be Rule 5 Draft eligible this offseason if he is not added to the 40-man roster at some point. But here is plenty of time for him to be added to the 40-man to avoid the Rule 5 Draft next offseason.

Phillies Outfield Prospect Gabriel Rincones Jr. Impressing

Spring Training Performances So Far

In four spring games, Rincones has a .286/.375/.1.143 line with two home runs and three RBI. He has a 1.518 OPS so far in spring training games. Through the first three games, Rincones had a 221 wRC+ and a .544 wOBA. Rincones is the lone Phillie with multiple home runs so far in spring training. Kepler and Rincones are tied for the team lead in RBI. Furthermore, Rincones has the best slugging percentage and OPS on the team. Rincones, Crawford, and Otto Kemp have played in each of the Phillies’ four spring training games. Both of Rincones’ hits have been home runs. He has struck out once and been walked once so far. Out of his four appearances, Rincones started only one game. Defensively, he has played both left field and right field.

Minor League Numbers

Rincones had a .252/.347/.453 line with 11 home runs and 32 RBI in 68 minor league games last season, along with a 129 wRC+ and a .366 wOBA. He also had a 25.2% strikeout rate and an 11.6% walk rate in the minor leagues last season. At Double-A, Rincones had a .843 OPS and a 141 wRC+. He had a .778 OPS along with a 115 wRC+ in 2023.

In the minor leagues, Rincones has played both corner outfield positions but has played right field more often than left field. At Double-A last season, Rincones played 327 1/3 innings in right field compared to 128 1/3 innings in left field. Moreover, Rincones has been the designated hitter in 44 minor league games, including six such games in 2024. His steady minor-league numbers and his early spring performance could serve as a preview of how he’ll contribute when he reaches the majors.
