Phillies MLR: Who was hot and not in June?

Justin Crawford discourse will remain “fun”.

Your Top Hitters!

(AAA) Keaton Anthony – 11 G, 45 AB, .378/.417/.489, 0 HR, 2 RBI, 3 BB, 7 K, 0 SB

The 24 year old position-less Anthony continues to just mash the ball after a call-up from AA Reading. He hasn’t shown the same kind of power that he had prior to his promotion, but the dude can just flat out hit (in the minors, anyway…remind you of a certain current major leaguer?).

(AAA) Justin Crawford – 16 G, 64 AB, .344/.434/.469, 1 HR, 10 RBI, 11 BB, 9 K, 7 SB, 3 CS

If you don’t look under the covers, this should have fans and rival teams salivating. What do I mean by that? His prolific groundball rate likely doesn’t quite work at the MLB-level unless you think he is a one-of-a-kind player. Michael Baumann sums it up nicely here. Nevertheless! There is still some sneaky power with Crawford and of course he has the potential to reek havoc on the base-paths in the right situations. With above-average CF defense, he could definitely work. If I were the Phillies, I would be hyping him up big-time at the trade deadline.

(AA) Felix Reyes – 18 G, 71 AB, .324/.360/.620, 4 HR, 9 RBI, 3 BB, 9 K, 2 SB

The 24 year old OFer isn’t really a prospect anymore, but he has been a fun following this season with his power-surge. Of his 23 hits this month, 11 for for extra-bases. With Weston Wilson and Cal Stevenson manning the OF for LHV, I can’t see Reyes getting to AAA anytime soon.

(A+/AA) Dylan Campbell – 21 G, 78 AB, .321/.402/.487, 2 HR, 10 RBI, 11 BB, 12 K, 8 SB, 4 CS

What a month for Campbell, who earned himself a promotion to Reading. Primarily a CFer who also sees time in RF and at 2B. It’s a unique profile, but the 22 year old has been up and down all season at the plate. He is pretty awful against RHP (he’s a RHH), so the platoon splits are eye-popping.

(A-) Dante Nori – 23 G, 89 AB, .303/.376/.393, 0 HR, 14 RBI, 10 BB, 18 K, 6 SB, 1 CS

The Phillies 2024 1st round pick has really picked it up this last month and has improved his overall season line to .255/.338/.339 with 1 HR, 27 RBI and 18 SB in 274 AB.

Your Top Pitchers!

(AAA) Seth Johnson – 8 G, 9.2 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 5 BB, 11 K, 1 HR

Is Johnson likely better than one of the Phillies current bullpen arms? Maybe! Johnson certainly has the stuff to compete the the MLB-level…he just need to locate it. I think more time with Cotham could certainly be a long-term benefit for both Johnson and the Phillies if he works out some of the kinks with the Phillies.

(AAA) Nabil Crimsatt – 5 GS, 26 IP, 26 H, 9 R, 9 ER, 2 BB, 15 K, 5 HR, HBP

Easily the IronPigs best starter this month. Not currently on the 40-man roster, but could work his way there with continued success and the need of a spot-starter. He isn’t a prospect, but he has a fun name.

(AA) Jean Cabrera – 5 GS, 27 IP, 21 H, 10 R, 10 ER, 7 BB, 26 K, 2 HR, 2 HBP

It’s nice to see Cabrera bouncing back from a rough start to the season. There is still bottom-of-the-rotation ceiling for the 23 year old righty.

(AA) Tommy McCollum – 8 G, 10.2 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 10 K, HR

There was some hype around McCollum a few years ago, but has since tapered off a little. He missed some time in 2023 with an ankle injury and its been slow coming back for him. I’ve always been high on him because he has a pretty good splitter.

(A+) Estibenzon Jimenez – 3 GS, 17.1 IP, 11 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 13 K, 1 HR, 2 HBP

It has been an interesting season for the 23 year old Jimenez who has showed he can strike hitters out (61 strikeouts to 19 walks in 63.2 IP on the season). He has since been promoted to AA…where things haven’t gone as well.

(A+) Saul Teran – 7 G, 9 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 9 K

Teran was promoted to Jersey Shore after lighting up Clearwater with 31 strikeouts to 3 walks in 18 innings. Things have gone mostly okay so far in High-A, with a little less control.

(A-) Danyony Pulido – 5 G, 5.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, BB, 6 K, HBP
(A-) Titan Hayes – 5 G, 6.1 IP, 6 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 12 K
(A-) Jose Pena Jr. – 6 G, 8 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 5 K

Relievers put on a good show in Clearwater this month.

Your…not so Top Hitters

(AAA) Gabriel Rincones Jr. – 22 G, 70 AB, .200/.367/.329, 3 HR, 13 RBI, 16 BB, 25 K, 2 SB, 2 CS

I really thought this was going to be a big breakout year for Rincones, where he’d be an immediate call-up following an injury at the major league level. The walks are great, but his calling has been his ability to hit for power and those 3 homeruns were his only extra-base hits on the month.

(AA) Aidan Miller – 15 G, 56 AB, .196/.361/.339, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 14 BB, 14 K, 11 SB, 3 CS

No, it was not a banner month at the plate for the Phillies Top Hitting Prospect. He missed over a week with an injury and has struggled a bit as a result. He was doing so well last month that it will be interesting to see how he bounces back.

(AA) Carson DeMartini – 17 G, 67 AB, .239/.346/.313, 0 HR, 10 BB, 19 K, 8 SB, 0 CS

DeMartini did well to earn his promotion from High-A, but continues to see his power stunted at Reading…known for gifting hitters with some extra HR juice. Good news is he is still getting on base.

(A+) Bryan Rincon – 18 G, 63 AB, .143/.280/.190, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 11 BB, 26 K, 8 SB, 1 CS

I’m not sure Rincon’s bat ever catches up with his impressive glove at SS. A staple of Phillies Top 10 prospects lists, this could be the last year for that.

(A-) Aroon Escobar – 20 G, 74 AB, .203/.333/.267, 2 HR, 13 RBI, 6 BB, 16 K, 3 SB, 1 CS

The shine is starting to wear off on the crazy breakout for Escobar. He did deal with a minor injury this last month that kept him out of a few games, but nothing else that I can easily explain for the drop in production.

(A-) Eduardo Tait – 22 G, 79 AB, .215/.326/.367, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 12 BB, 16 K

A disappointing month for the 18 year old, but not awful either. Still getting on base and cutting down those strikeouts.

Your…not so Top Pitchers

(AAA) Andrew Painter – 5 GS, 23.1 IP, 25 H, 14 R, 14 ER, 11 BB, 25 K, 5 HR

It pains us all to see him here, but remember…recovery and development isn’t linear. The organization clearly has Painter working on a number of things, including his breaking pitches. Mick Abel is affording the Phillies that they do not need to rush Painter to the majors anytime soon. Painter was selected to play in the MLB Futures game, but the Phillies declined the invitation for him.

(A+) Casey Steward – 4 GS, 19 IP, 17 H, 11 R, 11 ER, 9 BB, 21 K, HR, 2 HBP

The struggles continue for Steward who saw his ERA increase to 5.62. The righty showed signs in 2024 as a potential breakout candidate, but has struggled to consistently find the zone.

(A+) Mavis Graves – 3 GS, 12.1 IP, 7 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 6 BB, 16 K, 4 HR

A grave season with a worse season ERA (6.50) than his month of June.

(A+) Alex McFarlane – 4 GS, 14.2 IP, 13 H, 12 R, 12 ER, 11 BB, 15 K, 2 HR, 2 HBP

Tommy John recovery is not linear and McFarlane’s season has certainly not been either. The promising prospect has shown glimmers of that pre-TJS shine, but has struggled mightily this month.

(A-/AA) Griff McGarry – 4 G, 12 IP, 14 H, 10 R, 8 ER, 7 BB, 14 K, HR

Classic Griff. We’ll always remember those great 3 starts back in April.
