Five Phillies Who Could Get Contract Extensions This Offseason

December 30, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

There are multiple Philadelphia Phillies players who could receive contract extensions this offseason. The Phillies have not done much this winter outside of re-signing star designated hitter Kyle Schwarber. Additionally, the Phillies have had a contract offer on the table for catcher J.T. Realmuto for a few weeks, according to MLB.com reporter Todd Zolecki. However, since that report from Zolecki during the Winter Meetings, there has been no movement on the Realmuto front. The Phillies may need to start looking into alternatives at the catching position.

With things on the free agency front quiet for the time being, there are some contract extensions the team may be working on. Furthermore, the lone other moves of note the Phillies have made are a Matt Strahm trade with the Kansas City Royals and signing Brad Keller to a multi-year contract to join the bullpen. There have been a couple of other minor moves that have happened with the bullpen. With that being said, things across baseball are largely in a holding pattern right now, with little trade or free agency movement recently.

Contract Extensions the Phillies Could Complete This Offseason

Jesús Luzardo

Jesús Luzardo was acquired by the Phillies in a trade with the Miami Marlins and had a standout first season in Philadelphia. In 2025, Luzardo had a 15-7 record with a 3.92 ERA in 32 starts. He also had a 1.220 WHIP with a 3.79 K/BB rate, along with a 0.78 HR/9 allowed rate this season. Luzardo pitched a career-high innings total this season, and recorded a career-best 5.3 fWAR. Opposing batters had a .239 average and a .324 BABIP against Luzardo. Now, he enters his final year of arbitration and is in line to be a free agent after the 2026 season. In terms of contract extensions for players currently in the organization, Luzardo should be the top priority. Having long-term starting pitching depth is important moving forward.

Jhoan Duran

Jhoan Duran was acquired by the Phillies in a deadline trade with the Minnesota Twins. This season, Duran had a 7-6 record along with a 2.06 ERA and 32 saves across 72 outings with the Twins and Phillies. He also had a 1.100 WHIP and a 4.21 K/BB rate, as well as a career-best 0.39 HR/9 allowed rate and a career-best 2.1 fWAR in 2025. Duran had a 1-2 record with a 2.18 ERA and 16 saves in 23 appearances with the Phillies. Furthermore, he had a 0.919 WHIP and a 27.00 K/BB rate as well as a 0.87 HR/9 allowed rate with the Phillies. Duran is under team control through the 2027 season. While not as urgent as a possible Luzardo extension is, a Duran extension this offseason would make some sense.

Andrew Painter/Justin Crawford/Aidan Miller

While the Phillies have not done this outside of the failed Scott Kingery contract, it has become a trend for teams to sign top prospects to long-term deals before they reach the majors or early on in their major league careers. Andrew Painter, along with Justin Crawford and Aidan Miller, are Phillies prospects who could get a long-term deal. All three are expected to play in the majors at some point in 2026. Crawford is in line to be a starting outfielder for the Phillies in 2026 as well. However, the Phillies are unlikely to do this at least before seeing any of them play in actual major league games. While it probably will not happen, never say never. It would not be like the Phillies to do it, but you never know.
