The beleaguered righthander will make his first trip to the IL since 2017
The Phillies announced that righthanded pitcher Aaron Nola will be headed to the Injured List.
The Phillies have placed RHP Aaron Nola on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to 5/15) with a right ankle sprain.
To fill his spot on the 26-man roster, RHP Daniel Robert was recalled from Lehigh Valley (AAA).

The news isn’t completely surprising because Nola turned in one of the worst starts of his career on Wednesday night, and any time that happens, there will be speculation regarding a physical problem. According to Matt Gelb, he suffered an ankle injury prior to that start.
Aaron Nola is going on the IL with a sprained right ankle suffered before Cleveland start. Mick Abel will make his big-league debut Sunday — just one spot start. Taijuan Walker goes back to rotation in Colorado.

On the other hand, it’s surprising because Nola has been one of the most durable pitchers in baseball over the past eight years. He went to the IL with a forearm strain in 2017, and since then, he’s made 30+ starts every year. (Barring the COVID-shortened 2020 season.)
The injury opens the door for prospect Mick Abel to make his major league debut. The one-time first round draft pick will start on Sunday before Taijuan Walker – having a surprisingly strong season – rejoins the rotation.
Hopefully, Nola can make a quick recovery and return to turn around what has so far been a very disappointing season.
