Not a lot is happening in the land of Flyers this week. But that didn’t stop the team mascot Gritty from getting involved in one of the hottest baseball teams around. No, not the Phillies (or the Jays for that matter). It’s the Savannah Bananas. The team, which has taken the baseball world by storm for their fun, entertaining and outside-the-box format, played at Citizens Bank Park on Sunday. And Gritty was there to participate in the festivities.

As shown in the tweet above, Maceo, the third base coach for the ball club, is performing a dance routine to “Wrecking Ball,” the Miley Cyrus hit from a few years back. Sauntering down the aisle, Maceo acts out the song’s lyrics while interacting with the fans. From there, Gritty takes over, doing much of the same dance moves before the two end up on the field. Gritty ducks and Maceo flies over him. The two then do some semblance of Savannah Bananas/Gritty ballet, with Gritty pretending to collapse before Maceo revives him. The duo then stand up and take a well-deserved bow to the ovation of the fans.
It’s not the first time Gritty has done something to the Miley Cyrus tune. Back in 2018, when he became the Flyers mascot, Gritty descended from the rafters of Wells Fargo Center to announce his presence with the team. It wasn’t the smoothest of descents, as Gritty swung around high above the ice surface like a, well, wrecking ball through the air. Fortunately he landed in one piece and didn’t end up plastered against the scoreboard before perishing.
We’re not sure if Gritty got the job over the Phillies Fanatic on merit. The Phillies mascot was seen in San Francisco recently alongside other mascots. Perhaps he’s still trying to flee his infamous cam shot at Citizens Bank Park earlier in July with another mascot that may or may not have been his wife. It’s also unclear if Gritty will join the Savannah Bananas in the summer months as a player. We don’t believe he’ll be an UFM (Unrestricted Free Mascot) anytime soon.
Regardless, Gritty continues to surprise, amuse and amaze now seven years in, something a lot of skeptics didn’t believe would be possible given the sometimes-volatile nature of the Flyers fan base.
Gritty will have more opportunities to run a muck when the Flyers host the Boston Bruins for their first preseason game of the year on Sept. 27. And of course, during the Flyers’ home opener for the 2025-26 regular season on Oct. 13 against the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers.
