After four day of training camp the Flyers opened their preseason in Newark with a match up against the Devils. Training camp has been highlighted by head coach John Tortorella working the troops hard. This included the first day of practice with no pucks, a patented Tortorella move. Followed by a weekend full of intersquad scrimmages. The entire camp roster were spilt into three teams, which would rotate between practice, scrimmages, and an off ice workout each day. Including one of three days having two scrimmages.
The training camp roster originally included 30 forwards, 26 defensemen, and 6 goalies. All the familiar faces, veterans, and new comers are there. Including Cam Atkinson, and Sean Couturier who both missed all of last season with injures. Defenseman Oliver Bonk who was drafted in the first round of this years draft was in attendance before getting sent back to his junior hockey team in London Ontario. While goalie Carson Bjarnason who was also drafted this year signed a three year entry level contract while at camp.
The Flyers dropped their first preseason game of the year against the Devils in New Jersey 6-0. The only highlight of the game was seeing the Flyers in game action sporting their new road uniforms. While it was also the first game for Sean Couturier since December of 2021 while recovering from a back injury. Newly acquired goalie from the LA Kings, Cal Petersen made his Flyers debut, playing two periods giving up five goals including four in the first six minutes of the game. The final twenty minutes were finished by Felix Sandstrom who stopped nine of the ten shots he faced. While camp invite Matt Brown led the team with three shots. And Nick Seeler having a fight against Brian Halonen in the first five minutes of the game.
The Flyers continue their preseason on Wednesday the 27th at the Islanders and Friday the 29th at the Bruins, before having their first home game against the Devils on Saturday the 30th.
