What Will The Eagles Do In Free Agency?

January 30, 2022 by Philadelphia Sports Nation

When the free agency period begins in March, the Eagles will have plenty of cap space to do what they want. What the Eagles do with that money is to be determined. Could the Eagles look to add a top-tier pass rusher? What about a high-level wide receiver next to DeVonta Smith? The Eagles have the money to make big moves, but what big moves could be made?

#Eagles should be at around $23 million in salary cap space now. More than enough to do whatever they want in free agency.

Before looking at who the Eagles could get, we need to look at who they are losing. Brandon Brooks has just announced his retirement, both starting safeties Rodney McLeod and Anthony Harris are set to hit the open market, number two corner Steven Nelson is also a free agent, and the Eagles will also most likely be losing Derek Barnett come March. While other players are free agents, these are mostly the big ones set to hit the market.

Looking at the roster, reshaping the defense will likely be a major task this off-season. Will the Eagles look to the draft to fix the defense or in free agency? They could certainly use both the draft and free agency to help fix the defense. If the Eagles wanted to make a splash in free agency they could look to add Pro Bowl defensive end Harold Landry to replace Derek Barnett’s starting spot, just as one option. The Eagles could also look to make a splash in the secondary, especially at safety. Players like Marcus Williams and Tyrann Mathieu are guys who could reshape the back end of the secondary. I’m sure the Eagles will look to add a veteran or two along to help with the defense, it’s just a question of who it will be.

Now probably the most intriguing question heading into free agency, what will the Eagles do at the wide receiver number two position? Jalen Reagor is flat out not it. The Eagles are committed to surrounding Hurts with talent and there are a lot of talented options out there. Could the Eagles look to spend big on Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams and give Hurts a legitimate deep threat? What about a big body receiver in Allen Robinson? Or trading for superstar receiver Calvin Ridley? There are so many options out there for the Eagles to pursue at wide receiver, it’s just a matter of how they use their cap space and draft capital.

Free agency is always a fun time of the year, it’s even more fun when you can expect your favorite team to be big players. Last season the Eagles had to beat around the bush with their cap crisis, this year is not the case. The Eagles are primed to be big players this free agency while they look to improve off a 9-8 season with a playoff birth.
