Three Philadelphia Eagles Contract Extension Candidates

July 23, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

The Philadelphia Eagles have many top-end players on the roster already under contract for multiple years. That doesn’t mean that all of their key players have a long-term contract in place, though. Howie Roseman is constantly reworking deals and making tough roster decisions, and this is no exception. Here are three players playing on expiring contracts and their chances of an extension before their current deals end.

Philadelphia Eagles on Expiring Deals Worth Contract Extensions

Reed Blankenship

Reed Blankenship is as deserving as anyone on the team of a contract extension. From working his way onto the team in 2022 as an undrafted free agent to solidifying a spot as a starter, he has been one of the players the Eagles’ defense could constantly rely on over the last couple of years. Blankenship may not be one of the truly elite safeties in the league, but he has become an above-average safety who has a knack for forcing turnovers.

He is also a veteran presence for a very young secondary and someone who has emerged as a defensive leader. With the Eagles also trading C.J. Gardner-Johnson to the Houston Texans earlier this offseason, all signs point to them making Blankenship the safety of the future. Blankenship’s odds of a contract extension are high. Given the Eagles’ history of extending players sooner rather than later, it’s possible it could happen before Week 1.

Nakobe Dean

If this question were asked between the end of the regular season and the start of the playoffs, Dean would have been in a similar position to Blankenship regarding a new contract. He had emerged as a leader on defense and was having a career-best season. Unfortunately, things have not played out in Dean’s favor since. The breakout linebacker suffered a torn patellar tendon in his left knee in the Wild Card Round against Green Bay.

The Eagles then signed Zack Baun to a massive contract extension and selected Jihaad Campbell with their first-round pick in the NFL Draft. It’s hard to imagine the Eagles extending Dean’s contract after investing all of these resources into the linebacker position, making it unlikely the two sides will work out an extension.

Grant Calcaterra

Calcaterra was a pleasant surprise in the role he was able to play for the Eagles last season. The numbers aren’t eye-popping, but he was a reliable option who played a significant amount for the Eagles in 2024. According to Pro Football Reference, Calcaterra played 766 snaps for the Eagles in the regular season, accounting for 66% of their total offensive snaps. It would be interesting to see how he can perform throughout a full season as a TE, as he was a consistent option for Hurts in the pass game. It also helps that he and Hurts have chemistry together, going back to their days playing at Oklahoma.

With all of that said, Calcaterra has shown weakness at times in his blocking in the run game, and with that being such a vital part of the Eagles’ offense, they may hesitate to give out a contract extension to Calcaterra before the season starts. The Eagles also have many draft picks in the 2026 draft, so they could look for a cheaper option there. It’s more likely that a replacement tight end is drafted in 2026 than that Calcaterra’s contract is extended.

When you have a roster as deep as the Eagles do, it forces you to make some tough decisions. Making these contract decisions is never easy, but there is nobody better equipped to do so than Roseman.
