The Eagles Offense is Broken, with the Loss to Denver Highlighting Why

The Philadelphia Eagles have been getting away with making mistakes, finding ways to win games still. That did not happen in Week 5. Sloppy play, marked by way too many untimely penalties and poor situational football, ultimately caught up with them in their loss to the Denver Broncos. They shouldn’t hit the panic button by any means, but it’s beyond time to be concerned about their broken offense.

The Eagles’ offense has lost their identity

The Eagles have way too much talent to be having this many issues offensively. There is just so much going wrong right now. They are sloppy, they aren’t executing the plays called, and the offensive coaching staff is still trying to find consistency. When you consider all of these issues, it leads to one main takeaway that the Eagles haven’t had offensively in years: they have no identity.

What does the offense do well?

Think back to the 2024 season. The Eagles had a dominant run game that they relied on, while capitalizing on explosive plays off the run game’s success. For the most part, they were able to do whatever they wanted offensively as the two complemented each other. This season, their offensive identity is… inconsistency? They look like a different team from game to game. While watching the Eagles offense, ask yourself this question: What do they do well?
Early in the season, they looked like they wanted to continue to be a power running football team, while taking a few shots on explosive plays a game. Jump to Week 5, and Saquon Barkley finished a game with six carries. This is the sign of a team that is just lost. Yes, the Eagles need to be better at passing the ball than they were early in the season. But there needs to be a balance from the offense. Even if A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith are correct in wanting the passing game to be better, Barkley still needs to be the focal point. The passing game had its biggest performance statistic-wise, and it resulted in a loss.

How is this coaching staff helping?

This falls on the coaching staff as well. Nick Sirianni has always been able to establish an identity with the Eagles. He has built his offenses (and teams as a whole) on his core principles of tough, detailed, together. Right now, this team isn’t any of those things. Kevin Patullo has a hand in this as well. There will be stretches where they are firing on all cylinders, but most of the time, they just look lost. The play calling is inconsistent and predictable, underachieving with the talent the offense has. The offense has felt like they go into games with a few plays they schemed up, and just rely on the players to make plays the rest of the time. That is simply not good enough in today’s NFL.
For example, look at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs Seattle Seahawks game. They are driving up and down the field at will, scoring whenever they want. Neither of those teams has the offensive talent that the Eagles have. A common way to evaluate coaches is to judge them by whether they are doing more with less. Teams around the league are always doing that. When looking at the Eagles, they consistently find ways to do less with more. That falls squarely on Sirianni and Patullo.

The players are not executing

While the coaches aren’t doing them any favors, the players are at fault, too. The offensive line isn’t playing up to its standard. Barkley hasn’t been able to rip off explosive plays like he has before. Brown and Smith have been inconsistent this season. Jalen Hurts has been fine, and while he hasn’t been the biggest problem for the Eagles’ offense, he hasn’t been the solution. Everything seems just a bit off for the offense, with people not being on the same page.
One play from the game perfectly captures this. Up 17-3 with about four minutes left in the third quarter, the offense dialed up a play for their best receiver, which got him open behind the defense for which should have been a walk-in touchdown. The coaches finally dialed up a clever play, leaving it up to the players to execute. They did not.

Hurts might have put a bit too much on this throw. The biggest problem with this, though, is Brown slowing up on his route for no apparent reason. If he continues running his route at full steam, he likely catches this ball for the touchdown that puts this game away. Instead, the Eagles’ offense continued to sputter. Again. Brown is one of the best receivers in football. Nobody questions his talent. But after complaining all week about not getting the ball enough, this is a really bad look for the receiver with a chance to put the game away.

They are also playing undisciplined football. Even with all their mistakes, they had a chance to win the game late and completed a huge pass to Smith. The problem is, they had a self-inflicted pre-snap penalty negating it. Hurts makes a great throw, Smith comes down with it. The problem is, Barkley never gets set.

A huge play that could have led to a win is negated by not being able to play detail-oriented football. It is impossible to win games with all of these self inflicted wounds. Everything just seems a bit off and harder than it needs to be.

Broken as a whole

There is no one issue that is causing the offense to sputter. There is no simple fix. The offense has many problems and needs to fix them quickly. On the bright side, the Eagles clearly have the personnel to be better. Hopefully, later in the season, we look back and just chalk it up as a team figuring themselves out early in the season. They will get a chance to right the ship quickly, with a short week playing the New York Giants on Thursday Night Football. Until then, the Eagles’ offense has more questions than it has answers.
