The rumors have started up again. With his contract set to expire in 2026, tight end Dallas Goedert is on the trade block—something may be in the works for the 2025 NFL Draft (April 24–26).
Would the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles be smart to move off of their star tight end? Or is it a disaster waiting to happen?
Goedert’s Game & Why Eagles May Pursue a Trade
By all accounts, the 30-year-old Goedert is still one of the best tight ends in the business. His elite efficiency metrics make him stand out—he’s not always getting the ball, but when he does, he can make plays. That, plus above-average blocking, is why he’s a terrific fit in Philadelphia.
Unfortunately, the NFL is a salary-cap league. General manager Howie Roseman prioritizes paying superstars before luxuries like Jalen Hurts’ third throwing option. Goedert’s 5.67 targets per game over the past three seasons are considerably fewer than A.J. Brown’s 8.51 and DeVonta Smith’s 7.33.
Goedert has a case as one of the five best players at his position in the NFL.
But do the Eagles want to pay up on an extension, or would they rather recoup assets, save money, and draft his replacement?
What Could a Goedert Trade Look Like?
If the Eagles were to part ways with the seven-year veteran, what type of return would make that justified?
Well, that’s a hard question to answer. Though Saquon Barkley, Brown, and Smith are Hurts’ top three options on the offense, there would have to be an immediate replacement for Goedert’s all-around game if he were indeed traded. He stepped up in the big moments, and was an above-average blocker when he wasn’t getting the ball.
He’s a star player, but the Eagles probably aren’t looking at a haul in a trade. Needing a potentially pricey new deal, he may not return more than a third-round pick. In a package deal with the 32nd-overall pick, he may get you up to the late teens, if that.
Pros & Cons of Trading Goedert

Though he’s obviously had success in Philadelphia, being the third pass option isn’t necessarily maximizing his potential. There are teams who could use Goedert more than the Eagles, which would make a big-money extension more justified.
Ultimately, if the Eagles can just get “Goedert at home”—a worse version but without the cost—that’d be fine. They’d need to upgrade in another area to offset their collective offseason departures, most definitely, but it’s possible that the offense doesn’t regress substantially if they play their cards right. He’s frequently missed time, so it’s not like the Birds would be a non-contender without him. Just not as good in the short term.
Value is key. The Eagles have as lengthy a window as you can get in the NFL, but being too cute, like trading a star player because of “money,” could be a head-scratcher years down the line.
So, it’s important to be careful.
Should the Eagles trade Goedert, or avoid a deal at all costs? It’s hard to picture a universe where they get better after trading an elite tight end. But could it be worth it in the long run? After the draft is done (probably the first night), the trade rumors should either be confirmed or dispelled.
