Philadelphia Eagles Are Releasing Longtime Franchise Star

March 18, 2022 by The Spun

A solo shot of Eagles star Fletcher Cox on the football field.

The Philadelphia Eagles released defensive lineman Fletcher Cox, but they might soon reunite.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, Cox’s $18 million would have become fully guaranteed at 4 p.m. Thursday. While Philadelphia cut the 31-year-old to avoid that cap hit, the team is communicating with the defensive tackle’s agents about a new deal.

Fletcher Cox was released by the #Eagles with a post-June 1 designation, sources say. At 4p, $18 million would have become fully guaranteed. Cox is now a free agent but the team and his representatives continue to have discussions about a possible return.

Cox snapped a streak of six straight Pro Bowl bids last season, tallying 3.5 sacks and 12 quarterback hits in 16 games. His play no longer justified the lofty salary, but he remained a key competent to Philadelphia’s defense.

The 6’4″, 310-pounder has spent his entire career with the Eagles since getting selected with the 12th pick of the 2012 draft. He’s tallied 58 sacks, 443 tackles, and 12 fumble recoveries in 158 of 161 possible games.

Cox was also essential to the Eagles capturing their first and only Super Bowl title in franchise history.

Former teammate Zach Ertz quickly recruited the free agent to the Arizona Cardinals.

Even if his production has dipped, losing Cox would be a big blow to the City of Brotherly Love.
