The Eagles have a new safety!
With the 64th pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles select … Andrew Mukuba, safety, Texas!
Mukuba, who turns 23 this season, began his collegiate career at Clemson before transferring to Texas last year. He notably had five interceptions for the Longhorns in 2024.
The Eagles had a need at safety after trading C.J. Gardner-Johnson to the Houston Texans. The play-making Mukuba figures to compete with Sydney Brown for a starting job next to Reed Blankenship. He might also contend for playing time at nickel cornerback if Cooper DeJean moves to the outside.
Mukuba was the No. 72 prospect on the Arif Hasan consensus big board.
BGN’s Jonny Page had Mukuba as his No. 5 ranked safety:
Overall: At worst, Mukuba should be a passing game specialist due to his outstanding ball skills and instincts. He’s a really good football player. He might struggle to be a full-time player due to his size, but he will have a role in the NFL due to his instincts.
Eagles Thoughts: I’d be very interested in adding Mukuba to this Eagles’ safety room. I think, at the very least, he has the instincts to be very valuable on passing downs. I think he plays the run very well, but the question is simply whether he can do it full-time at 186 pounds with short arms. I think I would take the risk at the end of the 2nd – but it would be a big risk.
Scouting report via NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein:
Four-year starter who plays the game with the instincts and awareness of a player who has seen a lot of football. Mukuba has the athleticism to play in the slot but is best when he’s able to read the field as a “robber” and use his instincts, burst and ball skills to make plays. He moves efficiently in coverage, but that efficiency can get away from him in run support, where he races in too hot and misses tackles. Mukuba possesses the character, physicality and playmaking instincts that will draw NFL teams to him as a future starter.
