Free Agency Has Begun

March 17, 2022 by Philadelphia Sports Nation

Well, Free Agency officially began this morning and moves that have been announced throughout the week are now official.

Russell Wilson will be wearing Orange for his foreseeable future. While Randy Gregory hilariously trolled the Cowboys into thinking he was staying in Dallas before signing a massive 5 year $70 million dollar contract with Denver.

Those who were hoping GM Howie Roseman would make some major splashes on the opening day of Free Agency may be disappointed. Rumored to have been huge competitors for Marcus Williams, the Eagles fell short in trying to match the Ravens offer that saw the 25 year old Safety fetch an annual $14 million over the next 5 years.

We’re still over a month away from the NFL Draft. The Eagles still hold all 3 of their first round picks and will have to save some cap space to make room for three rookie deals. However Howie’s been making his rounds and getting this roster prepared for the 2022 season.

Signed

The biggest move the Eagles have announced was a 3 year deal for OLB Haason Reddick. Labelling himself as a “Weapon” in his Twitter Bio. Perhaps the Eagles could see Reddick filling in alongside Sweat & Graham on the edge. If Gannon’s Defensive Scheme is capable.

WR Greg Ward will be returning to the Eagles in 2022. Ward might not be elite, but the price tag is low. $850k is a serviceable number. For someone who’s been more reliable in games compared to Reagor & JJAW, I’ll take Ward for another year.

CB Andre Chachare also signed a 1 year deal. Only worth $660k so this isn’t necessarily bad. Chachare appeared in 16 games last season, only playing 56 total snaps. Nothing crazy to note here unless the 26 year old is able to prove himself in a depth position that could see more snaps outside of Special Teams.

Free Agents

The Eagles have a lengthy list of their own Free Agents. Including the following:

Derek Barnett (DE)

Barnett hopefully won’t be receiving an extension. Coming off the worst season of his career. Giving up 62 penalty yards that kept the defence from getting off the field came costly, in games that could have ended differently if not for 3 Offsides and 3 Roughing the Passers.

Steven Nelson (CB)

Nelson’s $3mil one year contract was quite servicable as a CB2. Hard to blame Nelson when Gannon had the DB’s playing several yards off their receivers most of the season. If Nelson wanted to stick around on a similar deal, I wouldn’t object considering his current replacement on the depth chart is Zech McPhearson.

Anthony Harris (S)

Another great position player potentially leaving the Eagles. A $5mil deal was great to see where the Eagles defence could stick with new DC Gannon behind the helm. Things worked out poorly as the defence gave up nearly 80% completion rates to the majority of QB’s. but the DB’s were able to shine when given the opportunity to.

Ryan Kerrigan (DE)

You’d think signing a division rival would’ve been beneficial for the Eagles defence. Kerrigan was a terrible example of that. Coming off a 5.5 sack season with the Football Team. Playing a similar number of snaps (397 in 2020 compared to 330 in 2021) you’d hope Kerrigan would have continued that in Philly. With the 2021 season proving otherwise, it’s time to let the Kerrigan ship sail on.

Rodney McLeod (S)

If McLeod is gone after this year. Another member of the Super Bowl 52 team will no longer be suiting up for the Eagles. You hope that’s not the case, as the Eagles depth chart would have Marcus Epps and K’Von Wallace as the starting safeties if McLeod and Harris are to move on.

Genard Avery (OLB)

The Genard Avery trade was weird from the start. Only playing 126 snaps in 2020 and starting 12 games in 2021. 3 Sacks and 55 Tackles isn’t much. Considering the Reddick signing has already come through. I’d expect Avery to be gone.

Boston Scott (RB)

The Eagles announced they won’t be tendering Boston Scott. Meaning the Giant Killer will be able to hit free agency and potentially sign with other teams. This doesn’t necessarily mean the end for Boston Scott, but his time might be up.

Alex Singleton (LB)

The Eagles are letting 2x leading tackler Alex Singleton walk this year. Maybe that means they have their eyes set on drafting a LineBacker in the first round? Guess we’ll have to wait till Draft Day to find out.

There’s still some big name Free Agents out on the market. Hopefully the Eagles are able to improve the WR depth. The market went through a tumble when Christian Kirk was able to sign an $84 million dollar deal.

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what Howie gets up to before the season starts.
