Earlier: The Philadelphia Eagles released Fletcher Cox earlier this week, but all indications are that the two sides are not done with each other.
If the Eagles had not cut Cox, the 31-year-old defensive tackle’s $18 million salary for 2022 would have been fully guaranteed at 4 p.m. ET on Thursday. Philly made the move to shed some cap space, but communicated to Cox that they still wanted him back.
As of this morning, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo said the two sides continue to discuss a one-year deal. If all goes well, Cox could sign as soon as Monday.
The #Eagles and DT Fletcher Cox continue to work through the details of a one-year deal, sources say. I’d expect it to be finalized and signed in the coming days, perhaps Monday. But he’s still on track to return.

A first-round draft pick in 2012, Cox has been a stalwart on the defensive line for 10 seasons with the Eagles. From 2015-20, he made the Pro Bowl every year and was also named first-team All-Pro in 2018.
Cox started 16 of 17 games in 2021, recording 35 tackles, 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.
Zach Ertz, his former teammate with Philly, tried to recruit Cox to join him in Arizona, but it looks like that effort will be in vain.
Update: Well, so much for having to even wait until Monday. ESPN’s Adam Schefter says Cox and the Eagles have agreed to a deal as of this morning.
DT Fletcher Cox officially has reached agreement with the Eagles to return to Philadelphia on a one-year deal, per source.
