The Philadelphia Eagles will take the field in the Meadowlands on Sunday against the New York Jets with an opportunity to boost their standing in the NFC playoff picture.
However, the Eagles will have a new quarterback under center when the time for kickoff arrives.
According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, Philadelphia will start backup Gardner Minshew on Sunday against New York. Starter Jalen Hurts will be inactive with a lingering ankle injury.
Reports earlier in the weekend indicated that the Eagles were leaning in this direction as Hurts’ status hadn’t improved, but now it’s official. Minshew Mania will return for the first time since 2020 and for the first time ever as a member of the Eagles.

Sunday will mark Minshew’s first start of the 2021 season, after he played in 23 games combined over the two previous campaigns. However, after the Jacksonville Jaguars drafted quarterback Trevor Lawrence with the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft, Minshew was left without a path to the starting job, so he was traded to the Eagles in late August.
Since then, the 25-year-old has served as the backup to another talented young signal caller. Minshew has appeared in just one game this season and thrown two passes, both of which were completions.
Sunday’s game against the Jets will be a huge opportunity for Minshew to prove that he still deserves to be in the conversation for a starting job somewhere around the league. With 37 career touchdowns and only 11 interceptions, the former sixth-round pick definitely has some upside, but he’ll need to show that on the field this afternoon.
The Eagles (5-7) will take on the Jets (3-8) at 1 p.m. ET.
