Right now in the thick of the offseason before the draft, mini camp, and training camp have started up, I was thinking about some of my favorite games as an Eagles fan. While the 2018 Super Bowl run and victory was obviously incredible, my most memorable game as a fan was 2010’s Miracle at the New Meadowlands. I was seven years old when this game happened and it has stuck with me as one of my favorite Eagles games, and sports moments in general.
In a must-win Week 15 matchup against the NFC East rivals New York Giants, the Eagles played a sloppy first three quarters and entered the fourth quarter down 24-10 before the Giants reponsed again and the Birds entered the final 8 or so minutes of the game down by 21, seemingly out of the game.
What followed was one of my favorite stretches of Eagles football ever. First, Michael Vick hit tight end Brent Celek for a 65-yard touchdown, cutting the deficit back down to 14. A David Akers onside kick then drove the Eagles down the field and eventually set Vick up for a rushing touchdown into the endzone. The next Giants drive ended with a forced punt, allowing the Eagles to regain possession at the 12-yard line. The ensuing drive had two forceful Vick runs, eventually ending in a Jeremy Maclin touchdown that evened the score to 31-31 with just over a minute on the clock.
The game-winning drive was of course one for the ages, with DeSean Jackson recovering the Giants punt. He briefly fumbled the ball then launched onto a run into the endzone, sealing the victory for the Eagles 38-31.
As I said, this is one of my favorite moments as an Eagles fan. I was listening to the final drive of the game on the radio in a church parking lot in South Jersey before a Christmas service of all places. About a dozen other cars were all listening to Merrill Reese’s game call as Jackson ran for the final touchdown as well, and I will never forget everyone screaming in the parking lot when the Eagles won.
