5 questions and answers about Kylen Granson

Colts perspective on a tight end fighting to fit in Philly.

The Philadelphia Eagles signed two veteran free agent tight ends this offseason: Harrison Bryant and Kylen Granson. After already taking a closer look at Bryant, now it’s Granson’s turn.

Let’s learn more about this addition by getting an Indianapolis Colts perspective on him. Here’s what Luke Schultheis from Stampede Blue had to say about Williams through answers to my questions.

1 – Can you recap his time with the Colts?

After being drafted in the 4th round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Colts, Kylen Granson showed some receiving flashes but could never really consistently put it all together in Indianapolis. I do think there’s some talent there, as the Philadelphia Eagles wouldn’t have signed him otherwise. That being said, too many times he’d be MIA out on the field for prolonged stretches.

2 – To what extent, if any, do you think Granson was limited by Indy’s unsteady QB play? Do you think he has potential to benefit from a change of scenery?

Yes, absolutely. It’s hard as a young receiver to find your footing in this league, when your starting quarterback is essentially changing every year. He’s played with Carson Wentz, Matt Ryan, Nick Foles, Sam Ehlinger, Gardner Minshew, Anthony Richardson, and Joe Flacco during his first four seasons in the league. Maybe some added stability with Eagles starter Jalen Hurts can help him find his groove.

3 – What are his strengths?

He’s a ‘move’ receiving tight end with some scheme versatility and quickness.

4 – What are his weaknesses?

Blocking will never be his calling card, but he struggled with drops and slips last season. He didn’t have great tape by any stretch in 2024.

5 – Anything to know about him off the field?

Wouldn’t say off the field, but he’s one of the few Colts players who donned a Guardian cap last year.

BLG’s take: The Eagles will probably only keep three tight ends? Four tight ends PLUS a fullback (Ben VanSumeren) seems excessive. We know Dallas Goedert is the top option. Grant Calcaterra is arguably in pole position for TE2. It could come down to Bryant vs. Granson for the TE3 spot, then. Bryant stood out to me more in spring practices and also drew some unprompted praise from Jalen Hurts, who didn’t mention Granson. Granson saw a number of targets in the Eagles’ last spring practice and he looked capable but unspectacular. Maybe he lands on the practice squad?
