The former BIG EAST foe, heads to the Main Line to lead the ‘Cats.
Villanova has announced that Kevin Willard has been named the William B. Finneran Endowed Head Men’s Basketball Coach
Willard, who turns 50 the first week of April, will be headed to the Main Line after spending four years at Maryland, where he has tallied a 63-39 record and led the Terrapins to a 4-Seed in this year’s NCAA Tournament, ultimately losing to Florida in the Sweet 16 on Thursday. He had three years left on his seven-year deal in College Park that was roughly worth $28m.
Previous to Maryland, Willard, a Long Island Native, spent twelve seasons at Seton Hall where he has accumulated a 225-161 record with a regular-season Big East championship, a postseason conference championship, and five NCAA Tournament berths. Prior to that, the former Pitt Panther point guard went 45-49 in his three seasons leading the Gaels at Iona after being an assistant under Rick Pitino with the Boston Celtics and at Louisville.
Willard replaces Kyle Neptune, who was dismissed on March 15th after compiling a 54-47 record over three seasons at ‘Nova.
He is now the tenth head coach in Villanova Basketball’s 104-year history.
