‘Primary Candidate’ For Notre Dame Job Has Emerged

Notre Dame’s search for its next men’s basketball coach is reportedly heating up.

Penn State’s Micah Shrewsberry has been linked to the opening for a few weeks now, and has now emerged as “a primary candidate,” according to CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein.

If the Fighting Irish land the 46-year-old Indianapolis native, it won’t be for lack of trying by his current employer though.

“Shrewsberry is also expected to receive a lucrative, long-term offer to remain with the Nittany Lions,” Rothstein said.

A graduate of Cathedral High School in Indianapolis and Hanover (Ind.) College, Shrewsberry has an extensive coaching history in the Hoosier State.

He was an assistant coach at Wabash (1999-2000) and DePauw (2001-03) before a two-year stint as head coach at IU South Bend. From there, Shrewsberry served as an assistant under Brad Stevens at Butler from 2007-11 and Matt Painter at Purdue from 2011-13.

He then reunited with Stevens in Boston, spending six seasons as an assistant coach for the Celtics before returning to Purdue for two more years.

Shrewsberry was hired as the head coach at Penn State in 2021 and went 37-31 over the last two campaigns, including a 23-14 mark this season, which included a trip to the Big Ten title game and second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Notre Dame is aiming to replace Mike Brey, who stepped down from his position after 23 seasons.
