Penn State leading scorer Kanye Clary no longer with team, per Mike Rhoades

February 20, 2024 by Zags Blog

Penn State is losing over 20% of its scoring, as head coach Mike Rhoades informed the media on Monday leading scorer Kanye Clary is no longer with the team.

“Kanye is no longer with the team,” Rhoades said. “Coaches decision. We’re going to keep moving forward on the guys we got, the task at hand. It came to a point where we’re at that I made the decision as the head coach to move on. I’ll leave it at that.”

Clary did not play in Penn State’s most recent 68-49 loss to Nebraska on Saturday that dropped the Nittany Lions to 12-14 overall. Clary was averaging 16.7 points per game on 37.7% shooting from 3-point range. He also added 2.9 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.0 steals per game.

Rhoades did not expand on why Clary was let go. However, he did mention players would have to step up in his absence.

“Other guys are gonna move around at some positions and all that stuff,” Rhoades said. “You want to get to a place where you have a system where guys feel comfortable no matter what position they’re in or how we go about it. It will definitely change some things moving forward, but just like injuries you’ve got to be ready to adapt and change and move.”

Penn State will next play at home vs. No. 12 Illinois on Wednesday, Feb. 21. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. ET.
