Paul Finebaum Names College Football’s Best Atmosphere

September 16, 2021 by The Spun

An extreme closeup of ESPN college football analyst Paul Finebaum from the Cotton Bowl in Texas in 2019.

This weekend, Penn State hosts Auburn in a non-conference battle between top 25 teams. More importantly, it is the annual “White Out” game.

If you’re unfamiliar with the “White Out” at Penn State, you probably don’t watch much college football. The atmosphere at Beaver Stadium when the entire crowd wears white–for what is usually PSU’s biggest home game of the season–is positive electric.

Several prominent analysts, including ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit, have called it the best stadium environment in college football. ESPN radio host Paul Finebaum did the same earlier today.

That’s a big compliment coming from an SEC-based media member.

Best college atmosphere in CFB….my man @finebaum just said on @SportsNation……….

It’s the #WhiteOut @PennStateFball

The Penn State “White Out” tradition began in 2004. The Nittany Lions actually lost to Purdue in that first game with a “snowed out” crowd, but went on to beat No. 6 Ohio State for the occasion the following year.

All-time, PSU is 8-8 in “White Out” games, with the tradition being interrupted last year because of COVID-19. Penn State has won three of its last four “White Out” opportunities, including beating No. 2 Ohio State in 2016.

This Saturday will be the second “White Out” matchup against an SEC opponent, with the first one having been against Alabama in 2011. The Crimson Tide won that contest, 27-11.

Penn State-Auburn will kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET Saturday on ABC.
