Antonio Gates Jr., son of NFL legend Antonio Gates, is starting to make a name for himself in the recruiting world.
Antonio Jr. is a four-star wide receiver in the 2022 cycle out of Dearborn, Michigan. He checks in as the No. 45 ranked receiver and No. 292 overall recruit, per the 247Sports composite.
On Thursday, the talented prospect narrowed his recruitment to five schools. Michigan State and Penn State made the cut out of the Big Ten. Florida, Kentucky and Tennessee out of the SEC are also in the mix.
The Spartans will be a tough out. Antonio Sr. had a brief stint at Michigan State during his college days before going to Kent State to play basketball. It’ll be interesting to see how his son’s recruitment shakes out.

Right now, Michigan State is the “Crystal Ball” favorite on 247Sports. Of the four insiders to make a prediction as to where Antonio Gates Jr. will land, all four point to the Spartans.
Antonio Jr. visited East Lansing earlier this year. It sounds like the Spartans hit it out of the park.
“They just did everything right,” Gates said, via 247Sports. “It’s always stuff outside of sports that they talk to me about, that’s what I respect about Michigan State.”
Like his father, Antonio Jr. is an excellent catcher in traffic. He uses his 6-foot-1, 185-pound frame to his advantage against smaller defenders.
Right now, two Big Ten and three SEC schools are in the mix to land Antonio Jr. But until proven otherwise, the Spartans are the team to beat.
