The Sixers are rightfully considered as one of the best defensive teams this season and contenders for potential playoffs.
In the defensive rating, the Sixers are fourth, next to the Clippers, and perhaps strong man-to-man defense can be called as their main advantage.
Ben Simons and Joel Embiid are some of the best in the league in this component, according to many media, including Meta.reviews. If Embiid is on par with Gobert as the best center in defense, Simmons is also good in defense with his versatility.
It is important that Ben is quite mobile and, at the same time, has a physical presence, and therefore changing him is a deliberately bad option for Sixers. Simmons will be able to defend against both the nimble guard such as Donovan Mitchell, for example, or versus the oversized striker. It is also worth noting that Ben is one of the team’s best stealers (1.5 steals on average). Knowing all this, it’s still hard to say that Simmons is the best Sixers defender.
All because there is another player in a team, who was considered to be the individual award contender by many, including Telecomasia.net, before the injury: Joel Embiid. It is a well-known fact that Joel is an awesome center in defense, who also shows phenomenal level in attack. Joel is gorgeous on all sides of the game. One of the best at the key, can do medium and long-range throws with a high percentage, what more can you ask from a player?
In fact, at his best, Embiid claims to be the best two-way player in the league. He is one of these personalities who can prevent other teams from obtaining the title. And if health allows showing Cameroonian his current level, he’s worth keeping an eye on.
But Embiid is not the only part of the Sixers’ defending system. We’ve already touched on Simmons’ defensive play, but in attack, he is still the same limited productive forward without a shot. Ben is very athletic, and it helps him not only in defense. Almost all his scoring is based on athleticism. Therefore, we can conclude that if Ben won’t set at least some kind of throw for himself by the age of 30 he might become an average player. The physics leaves every player over the years. Except for maybe legendary LeBron who seem to be able to score even at 80.
At the moment, Ben is only 24. As long as he can use his physics to his advantage, he will do it. But fitness alone is certainly not enough to be Sixers second star. And many publications and blogs on Centreforum.org are exactly about that.
He’s a smart player with a good pass. It helps him offensively. But the lack of throws hinders him, and Simmons’ variability in attack suffers from this.
The third star of the current team is Tobias Harris. In the games where Simmons and Embiid were absent, Harris took on the role of the main scorer. He did it brilliantly, scoring the needed number to win those days. At the same time, he was quite good at the defense, although is far from the best in this aspect.
The rest of the Sixers roster mostly contains role players, and most of them are shooters. Danny Green, Seth Curry, Furkan Korkmaz, and George Hill after a recent exchange, for example.
Also worth noting are Matisse Tibull, Tyreese Maxie, and Shake Milton, who are throwing the long-range ones a little less and with a not-so-great success rate. Shake Milton stands out of three thanks to 13.7 points on average because he scores more two-pointers.
Currently, the Sixers have a great potential to win the conference and go quite far in the playoffs. If the defense will act as efficiently as during the regular season they even might win it.
