Tyrese Maxey, already dealing with an injury to his shooting hand, landed awkwardly and suffered a back contusion Monday vs. the Blazers.
Another game, another injury for the Sixers.
Tyrese Maxey, who was already playing with an injury to his right shooting hand, fell awkwardly on a drive and immediately grabbed his back midway through the third quarter of Monday night’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers.

The team ruled him out for the rest of the night with a back contusion.
As you can see in the video above, Maxey was writhing in pain for several minutes as the Sixers called a timeout. He was eventually able to walk off the court under his own power, but did so very gingerly and headed straight for the locker room.
The hand injury was already affecting Maxey in a big way even before the fall. The star guard was just 2-of-13 from the floor Monday night before exiting. He was coming off a rough shooting night in a win over the Golden State Warriors where he went 2-of-14. In the three games Maxey has played with the finger injury, he’s shot 1-of-19 from three.
Joel Embiid was already shut down for the season last week after playing just 19 games while dealing with issues in his surgically repaired left knee. Paul George was added to the injury report on Sunday with a groin issue and was ruled out of Monday’s matchup.
The Sixers came into the game at 21-38, two full games behind the Chicago Bulls for the last play-in spot in the Eastern Conference. With that said, it’s been surprising to see Maxey attempt to play through an injury that’s clearly affecting his play on the court.
Update: 9:33 p.m. ET.
Maxey was not the only casualty of this game as Justin Edwards also left the game in the closing minutes with an ankle injury.
Nick Nurse actually had pretty thorough updates in his post-game press conference, both on those two and the two game-time decisions who couldn’t play against the Blazers.
He said that Maxey’s back contusion was “nothing too serious,” but also added that could change by the morning. He said that Edwards sprained the same ankle he did in the first practice after the All-Star break.
Both of them are anticipated to be listed as day-to-day. They’ll both travel to Minnesota for Tuesday’s game against the Wolves, as will Paul George and Kelly Oubre Jr., who will also be listed as day-to-day.
Edwards, Maxey, Paul George, and Kelly Oubre Jr. will all travel to Minnesota and will be listed as day-to-day.
Nurse doesn’t necessarily expect all 4 to play tomorrow
