The Sixers’ third overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft officially has his jersey number.
In recent weeks, it started to feel more and more likely that the Sixers would take VJ Edgecombe with their third overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. And as the big night arrived, there were no first-round trades or last-minute dramas for the Sixers. They stuck at no. 3, made a pick that makes a ton of sense, and brought Edgecombe to Philadelphia.
You can now find it a little easier to picture what the rookie will look like as a Sixer as well, now that the team has confirmed he’ll be wearing No. 77.

There’s lots to like about Edgecombe as a Sixer. The Bahamas native has a ton of explosiveness with his powerful first step and vertical bounce, sharp slashing ability, flashes of passing talent, and quality defensive tools with his athleticism and tireless motor. There are many little ways Edgecombe can help the Sixers right now, with the potential to grow into a star contributor in the future.
Sure, at 6-foot-4, he doesn’t bring much size to the team alongside Tyrese Maxey, Jared McCain, and the likely returning Quentin Grimes. Edgecombe needs to continue working on refining parts of his offense too, like his shot creation and pull-up shooting.
But those are things that can be worked out in time, and there are still so many exciting things about his skillset, athleticism, work ethic, and mindset that give him a fantastic ceiling to thrive.
It’ll also be interesting to see how Nick Nurse gets creative with three-guard lineups, leaning into the skills his talented group of guards have to offer and how they can complement one another with how well the likes of Maxey and McCain can play off ball. Not to mention the defense of Edgecombe and Grimes to support Maxey and McCain.
