After re-injuring his sprained finger, Tyrese Maxey’s 2024-25 season is officially over
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Well, even the expected news can come with an unpleasant twist.
After giving some push back on a similar report a week ago, the Sixers have officially ruled out Tyrese Maxey for the rest of the season. In the release, the team announced that he re-injured the sprained finger on his right hand in his ramp-up to return to the court.

In his pregame media availability ahead of their matchup with the Washington Wizards, Nick Nurse said the re-injury occurred during a practice before their April 1 matchup against the New York Knicks.
Nurse said he was “disappointed” by the news, hoping Maxey would be able to return to the court to work on some things before the end of the season.
“There’s still work to do on getting better and working on their craft,” Nurse said, “and I was hoping to use some of these games to let him experiment with even more things.”
While he won’t be able to get those reps, this result is certainly better for the Sixers’ tanking efforts. The team noted he is expected to make a full recovery and, more importantly, surgery will not be needed.
Maxey will end his season having appeared in 52 games, averaging 26.3 points and 6.1 assists per game. He’ll finish with 43.7/33.7/87.9% shooting splits.
Last week, ESPN’s Shams Charania had reported that Maxey was expected to be ruled out for the remainder of the season, and said Maxey’s agent Rich Paul had confirmed as much to him. That same night, April 3 before a game against the Bucks, Nurse and the Sixers would not confirm that report, only saying that he was out for that specific game.
With three games left to go and the Sixers hoping to retain their top-six protected draft pick, it’s no surprise that Maxey won’t be returning this season. It’s also not surprising that the timeline this team has provided is weird, to say the least.
