Peter Dinwiddie joined the Sixers organization in 2020 after coming over from Indiana.

The Philadelphia 76ers will have to update their organizational chart in the company directory today, as ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Peter Dinwiddie will be leaving for a position with the Atlanta Hawks as the Senior Vice President of Strategy and Analytics.

Dinwiddie joined the Sixers organization in 2020 with the title of Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations; previously an executive with the Indiana Pacers, he has the reputation as a well-respected figure throughout the league. Dinwiddie was originally hired during the period of time when Elton Brand was the top man in the front office, then was bumped down a rung when Daryl Morey was brought aboard just a month later.

Atlanta fired general manager Landry Fields and promoted Onsi Saleh to the position back in April, and are now fleshing out their front office positions. The Hawks haven’t won a playoff series since 2021 and have failed to reach the playoffs in five of the past eight seasons. We’ll see if their organizational shifts can help them get off the Play-In Tournament treadmill.

Meanwhile, we’ll never know who is exactly responsible for what within a front office that receives input from a multitude of different individuals, but it’s not ideal to have a key member be poached right ahead of a critical draft where the Sixers hold the third overall pick. We can certainly poke holes in the success of the organization in recent years, but the draft process has undeniably been a strength. Hopefully, we can continue to hold that opinion following the events to transpire on June 25.
