Should the Sixers Scrap This Season and Correct Their Offseason Mistake?

February 5, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

The Sixers could look to trade Paul George.

Ever since the Luka Doncic–Anthony Davis trade, it seems like anything could happen during this NBA trade deadline. We’ve already seen multiple stars getting shipped to new teams. Nobody appears to be safe. One player that has recently started to sprout up in NBA trade rumors is Paul George. It’s been rumored that multiple teams have shown interest in trading for Paul George. Recently, the Hawks and Warriors have been reported as teams showing interest in trading for George.

Should the Sixers Scrap This Season and Correct Their Offseason Mistake?

The Sixers Struggling is Fueling Paul George Trade Rumors

The Philadelphia 76ers have been largely disappointing this season. After getting George this offseason people were expecting that the Sixers would be competing at the top of the East. That has been far from the reality. They currently are the 11th seed in the East and sit way below .500 at 19-29. This is simply not acceptable for a team that was hoping to be contending for a spot in the NBA Finals.

Injuries to all three of the Sixers stars have been a huge reason for their disappointing season. With that being said, the big three of George, Joel Embiid, and Tyrese Maxey don’t seem to be as good as some thought. So should the Sixers end this experiment early? The Sixers’ terrible record certainly helps fuel George trade rumors. Getting off of his new long-term contract could be an interesting option for the struggling Sixers.

The Warriors Paul George Trade Rumors

There were lots of Paul George Warriors rumors this offseason, but they missed out on the star. Now it seems like they are looking to take another crack at getting George to the Bay. The Warriors have reportedly called on almost every star in the league, but we know how serious they were about getting George this offseason. Making a trade with the Warriors could be an opportunity for the Sixers to get younger and rid themselves of one of their two injury-riddled stars.

A Warriors trade package for George could also allow the Sixers to pivot toward a younger future. Jonathan Kuminga and Andrew Wiggins are both possible pieces that the Sixers could get back in a George trade. They would fit nicely with Maxey as athletic wings and Kuminga as a lot of upside. A Warriors-Paul George trade could benefit the Sixers in the long run.

The Hawks Need to Replace Jalen Johnson

The Hawks took a huge blow when Jalen Johnson went down for the rest of the season. They were in the middle of fighting for playoff positioning in the East. Now with Johnson out they are in desperate need to retool. If they can’t they are in danger of falling down the standings quickly. Right now they are 2-8 in their last ten games.

A Paul George trade could stop the Hawks from plummeting. It is unclear exactly who the Sixers would be interested in getting in return, but getting of of George’s contract might be enough for the Sixers to start a conversation. Clint Capela and Larry Nance Jr. are two expiring contracts the Sixers could take on in return for future flexibility. The Sixers certainly have some interesting decisions to make over the next few days.
