Philadelphia 76ers: Rebuilding Amid Challenges for a Strong 2025 Return

June 12, 2025 by Philadelphia Sports Nation

Rather than meeting the preseason hopes, the Philadelphia 76ers found the 2024–2025 campaign tough due to several significant injuries to key players.

Even after the big addition of Paul George, who was a nine-time All-Star, the team ended its season with only 24 wins and 58 losses.

The results did not match the 52.5 wins that were expected, making the franchise face a big challenge going into the offseason of 2025.

Medical Report Instead of Statistics

A lot of the events in the season were caused by serious health problems, which also affected online betting. Even though he promised to get a title for Philadelphia after signing a three-year, $193 million extension in September 2024, Joel Embiid still had to sit out 41 games because of his injuries. Despite putting up top stats as long as he was playing (averaging 27.9 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 3.5 assists), the basketball world missed him a lot when he was injured.

Likewise, Paul George’s first season with the team in Philadelphia was affected when he picked up a knee injury in the preseason and had to sit out the last two months because of a separate injury. Despite making the All-Star team, Tyrese Maxey missed most of the season due to a finger injury after an impressive performance last year, where he played well and was recognized as a main pillar of the team. Even though rookie Jared McCain had a promising season, he underwent knee surgery and didn’t play for the rest of the year after playing 23 games.

One Big Prize in a Series of Failures

The tough season allowed the 76ers to keep their top pick in the draft, and through the lottery, they were lucky enough to get third overall. Picking a leading draft player gives Daryl Morey a major choice to make. He can add talented youngsters to the roster or make a big trade with a draft pick to improve the team with players who are healthy.

Question #1 of the Offseason: The Health of the Leaders

Going forward to the 2025 offseason and the 2025–2026 season, the 76ers will be most concerned about keeping Embiid and George healthy. In order for the team to compete seriously, these players have to play as well as they have in the past. Recovery and good performance of these two are especially important since the franchise has numerous financial obligations connected to them.

Veterans, Youth, and a Choice That Will Decide a Lot

A number of players on the team may be able to change their contracts for the following season. If Oubre Jr., Drummond, and Gordon decide to opt in for exactly what they are due, their choices will play a significant role in the team’s depth. It appears from the latest updates that all three will come back, and Oubre hinted that he wants to wrap things up in Philadelphia. After his good rookie season, Justin Edwards can be kept by the team for $2 million for another year.

The Main Intrigue of the Draft and Trade Rumors

Fans and analysts usually pay a lot of attention to who the top three picks will be during the offseason. Several circumstances of the draft suggest that the 76ers could draft Rutgers wing Ace Bailey, who is a strong scorer. Other players who may be mentioned are Baylor’s VJ Edgecombe and Texas’s Tre Johnson if the team focuses on players who can make a difference straight away. The Sixers may also decide to trade the pick for a reliable player who could help them win this season.

Readiness for Next Season in Sight

While free agents can always play a part, the Sixers may not have many chances to add new players because they want to keep restricted free agent Quentin Grimes. Grimes, who was traded during the season, performed well with 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists in 28 games for Philadelphia, and the team is eager to re-sign him. Most likely, the team will search for players who can play alongside Embiid, Maxey, and George and help them in shooting, defense, and on the bench.

According to one report, the 76ers could become interested in Jaylen Brown if the Celtics decide to move him because of luxury tax issues, and this scenario would probably require trading Paul George and getting another player from another team. There are considered various trades that could give the Sixers options behind Embiid or at wing with names such as Daniel Gafford and Simone Fontecchio.

New Season – New Hope?

The 76ers are planning to play in the NBA Abu Dhabi Games 2025, and this will allow fans to see their healthy squad in action and observe new methods put in place by coach Lee (or Nurse, based on if there are any changes to the coaching situation).

Point of No Return or the Beginning of a New Chapter?

All in all, the success of the Philadelphia 76ers in 2025 is very important. Because of several injuries that threw their season off course, the franchise ended up with a high draft selection and might make major changes to their roster around the team’s key players.

If Embiid and George recover quickly, Maxey keeps advancing, good acquisitions are made through the draft, and the team is merged well, the 76ers could regain their place as contenders in the Eastern Conference.

The organization’s leaders, coaches, and managers should act quickly to deal with these challenges so they can catch any opportunities that await them.
