Philadelphia 76ers Expected to Re-Sign Multi-Time Award Winner

According to Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer, the Philadelphia 76ers are “expected to re-sign” one-time NBA All-Star Tyrese Maxey to a five-year, $205 million extension. Maxey is set to hit restricted free agency this summer, meaning it is incredibly unlikely the guard will join another team in the offseason.

Maxey is coming off a career year. In his fourth season, the 23-year-old averaged a career-high 25.9 points per game. Furthermore, he averaged 3.7 rebounds and 6.2 assists per game, both career-highs as well. In addition to his first All-Star selection during the season, Maxey took home the Most Improved Player and NBA Sportsmanship Award honors.

Joel Embiid Praises Tyrese Maxey

It is no surprise the 76ers want to keep Maxey around for the long run. He has proven he can turn into a star in the NBA. One of his biggest public advocates has been his MVP teammate Joel Embiid. Following the 76ers’ playoff loss to the New York Knicks, Embiid talked about Maxey’s improvement on the court.

“Every single year, I find a way to get better. Tyrese has gotten so much better, and I think there’s even another step that he can take. Some of the guys in the locker room, they’ve gotten better. Every single year, I’ve gotten better, so I’m excited to keep working on my game and myself, keep getting better, but when it comes to guys around, I like our group of guys.”

Additionally, Embiid later said he believes Maxey could potentially become a future MVP candidate.

“You’ve got a young superstar coming in and face of the franchise for his whole career in Philly.” “He has a chance to do something special next year again. I hope he becomes All-NBA this year. I think he can be in stuff like MVP conversations.”

The 2023-24 season was a big campaign for Embiid and Maxey as a duo. They proved they can be the team’s top two players and play winning basketball.

Re-Signing Tyrese Maxey is Just One Task for the Philadelphia 76ers

In addition to re-signing Maxey, the 76ers will have plenty of properties on their to-do list this offseason. According to Pompey, the team is aiming to add another star to pair alongside Embiid and Maxey. More specifically, Philadelphia reportedly has interest in wings Paul George, Jimmy Butler, Brandon Ingram, and even LeBron James.

“The Sixers want a maximum-salary player via free agency or trade from a pool that includes the Los Angeles Clippers’ Paul George, Los Angeles Lakers’ LeBron James, Miami Heat’s Jimmy Butler, and New Orleans Pelicans’ Brandon Ingram.”

The 76ers only have three players under contract for next season currently–Embiid, Paul Reed, and Ricky Council. With as much spending money as they will have this summer, it is not a surprise the 76ers could spend big and pursue a major free agent. It will be interesting to see if anything comes to fruition for the 76ers.
