Veteran free agent point guard Kyle Lowry took to Instagram to announce that he is re-signing with the Philadelphia 76ers. Reports are currently indicating it is a one-year contract.

The 38-year-old joined the 76ers in February 2024 after getting waived by the Charlotte Hornets following his trade from the Miami Heat. During the regular season, Lowry started 20 games for the 76ers and appeared in 23. In those games, he averaged 8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game.
Despite having an 18-year NBA career up to this point, Lowry made it clear he had no plans of retiring this summer.
Earlier in July, reports indicated that the Phoenix Suns were targeting Lowry. However, the Suns instead signed guard Monte Morris at the beginning of free agency. It is likely this took them out of the Lowry sweepstakes.

A Western Conference Contender Previously Had Interest in Kyle Lowry
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Los Angeles Clippers had interest in adding Lowry this offseason.
I nonetheless heard this week that Paul and Kyle Lowry, whose free agency is looming after finishing last season in Philadelphia, are veteran guards said to interest the Clippers.
Furthermore, according to Bovada, the Clippers (+180) were the betting favorites to land the 2019 NBA champion if he left the 76ers. This move would have reunited him with former Toronto Raptors teammate Kawhi Leonard. However, it was reported in June that Lowry was likely remaining with the 76ers. Instead of acquiring Lowry, the Clippers re-signed guard James Harden, who was their primary point guard last season. Additionally, guard Russell Westbrook opted into his $4 million player option for next season. However, it seems likely the Clippers will trade Westbrook this offseason.
The Clippers have now officially lost out on Lowry. This makes it interesting to see what happens next for the team as they aim to add guard depth this summer.
The 76ers Have Had a Busy Offseason Before Re-Signing Kyle Lowry
Even before re-signing Lowry, the 76ers were having a fantastic offseason. The team made a blockbuster move by signing All-NBA wing Paul George away from the Clippers. They also extended All-Star guard Tyrese Maxey to a five-year, $205 million contract extension. Furthermore, they also re-signed Kelly Oubre and added solid veterans in Eric Gordon, Caleb Martin, and Andre Drummond.
Last season, Philadelphia ended with a 47-35 record. Despite missing the 2023 MVP Joel Embiid for most of the season, they still snuck into the playoffs as the No. 7 seed. However, the team would go on to lose to the New York Knicks in the first round. Although they had a decent season, all things considered, it is evident they want more. Based on their moves so far this offseason, the 76ers are looking to make a major push as a contender in the Eastern Conference.
