Pair Of Top 5 2025 NBA Draft Picks Among 5 First-Rounders Playing In Salt Lake City Summer League

July 6, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

Like the California Summer League, the 2025 Salt Lake City Summer League will get underway on July 5 and serve as a precursor to the NBA’s Las Vegas event. The 2025 Salt Lake City League will feature several of the NBA’s top young talent, including the No. 3 and No. 5 selections in this past June’s draft.

The 2025 Salt Lake City Summer League has undergone several iterations since its inception in 1984 as the Rocky Mountain Revue. While the event began as a Pro-Am, in 1990, Jazz’s director of basketball operations, Scott Layden, revamped the league by inviting NBA squads.

The Rocky Mountain Revue was in existence through the summer of 2008. After a short hiatus, the Jazz revitalized the event in 2015 with three other teams — the Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers, and San Antonio Spurs. The SLC Summer League underwent another set of changes in 2019.

Similarly, the 2025 Salt Lake City Summer League, like the California Summer League, features four teams. The Oklahoma City Thunder and Memphis Grizzlies will join the Jazz and Sixers in this year’s event.

Pair Of Top 5 2025 NBA Draft Picks Headline Youngsters In 2025 Salt Lake City Summer League

The 2025 Salt Lake City Summer League will kick off tonight at 7 p.m. (ET) with the Grizzlies facing the Thunder. However, it is Game Two of the event between the Sixers and Jazz that is garnering the buzz. This Sixers-Jazz matchup is the first of what is expected to be many between VJ Edgecombe, the No. 3 selection in 2025, and Ace Bailey, the No. 5 pick.

Philadelphia reportedly was very interested in drafting Bailey with the No. 3 overall pick. However, the 19-year-old Rutgers decided not to work out for the Sixers. So, the 76ers went with Edgecombe, who should have been their top choice after Cooper Flagg and Dylan Harper anyway.

While Edgecombe and Bailey headline the event, there are plenty of talented youngsters playing in the 2025 Salt Lake City Summer League.  The Sixers also have Justin Edwards, who earned a multi-year contract after going undrafted in 2024, Johni Broome, and Adem Bona. Kyle Filipowski, Isaiah Collier, Brice Sensabaugh, Cody Williams, and Walter Clayton Jr. will also play for the Jazz.

Meanwhile, Memphis has three players on its summer league roster who may not play in Utah. The availability of Jahmai Mashack, Cedrick Coward, and Javon Small is in question.  Small, selected by the Grizzlies with the No. 48 pick, is expected to play this week. Mashack, out of Tennessee, was taken by Houston with the No. 59 pick but was shipped to the Grizzlies in a draft-night trade. With the trade not approved by the league office, Mashack may not be able to play in SLC.

Coward won’t play at all this summer. The 21-year-old is still recovering from a shoulder injury that limited his lone season at Washington State to six games.

2025 Salt Lake City Summer League Top Youngsters and Key Players

Philadelphia 76ers

Jalen Hood-Schifino

Jalen Hood-Schifino may be on the verge of a last chance. Hood-Schifino, who was selected with the No. 17 pick in 2023,  has struggled to stay healthy and produce in his two years in the NBA. While growth is needed overall, the 22-year-old needs to improve his shooting proficiency the most.

Justin Edwards

Edwards was terrific in his first season in Philly, earning a three-year contract this summer. The 22-year-old needs to continue his development with key areas being efficiency and defense.

Johni Broome

Broome is an athletic and defensively oriented  forward. The 2025 second draft pick possesses excellent footwork and is an outstanding rebounder and rim protector. He does need to improve his efficiency and shooting range.
